A powerful earthquake has killed and wounded hundreds of people in Pakistan's remote south-western province of Balochistan.

The 7.7-magnitude quake struck north-east of Awaran, destroying the mostly mud-built homes in the area.

As many as 300,000 people have been affected in Awaran and neighbouring districts.

The military - which has a heavy presence in the area because it is fighting a long-running separatist Baloch insurgency - was among the first to respond to the crisis.

Army officials say they have sent hundreds of soldiers, tents and medical supplies to help people in the affected areas.

Residents have been digging through the rubble for their belongings.

Makeshift hospitals have been set up in the region, but officials fear they will not be able to cope with the numbers affected.

After the quake, a small island appeared off the coast near the port of Gwadar.

Such land masses have appeared before following earthquakes in the region, and disappear again after a period of time.

The region is prone to earthquakes, with at least 35 people killed in a 7.8-magnitude tremor that was centred in south-eastern Iran in April.
