In pictures: Portrait Salon 2013

In 2011 photographers Carole Evans and James O Jenkins created Portrait Salon to show the best of the rejected images from the National Portrait Gallery's annual Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize.
This year the final 40 pictures from more than 300 photographers were selected by photographer Abbie Trayler-Smith, Harry Hardie, from Here Press, and Jim Stephenson, from Miniclick Talks.
“We know that everyone wants something tangible to rank their work against when entering competitions- but, deep down, the truth is that we are just people who try to remain objective but who also have our own preferences and opinions," says Stephenson.
"We have tried here to show an exploration (of sorts) of what a portrait can be, from the studio to the rolling hills of some far foreign land,” he adds.
Christiane Monarchi, of Photomonitor, writes of portrait photography: "The honesty in meeting a subject's eyes, across days, weeks or centuries between sitting and exhibition, has often enthralled me when walking into a gallery of portraiture."
The selected work has been printed in a newspaper as well as being shown as a projection in four venues across the UK.
