The ceremony was a mixture of jokes, rallying cries and of course Oscar wins.

The momentous moment of the Oscars evening was the rallying cry from Frances McDormand for female nominees to stand up, as she declared "look around, because we all have stories to tell", following her win for best actress for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Stars including Sally Hawkins, Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Meryl Streep joined in the celebration

McDormand also added: "I'm hyperventilating a little bit. If I fall over pick me up cause I've got some things to say"

Jodie Foster and Jennifer Lawrence presented the award to McDormand, with Foster appearing with crutches, jokingly blaming Meryl Streep for her injury

McDormand was the centre of attention as she left the stage

The Shape of Water was awarded best picture, with Guillermo del Toro and Sally Hawkins accepting the award from presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway

The stage looked like a glittering kingdom at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California, with a reported 45 million Swarovski crystals making up the design

Jimmy Kimmel, host of the Oscars 2018, cracked a stream of jokes, including taking aim at the US vice president: "We don't make films like Call Me By Your Name to make money, we make them to upset Mike Pence"

Kimmel was keen for all acceptance speeches to be kept to a minimum, offering a free jet ski (modelled by Helen Mirren) for the shortest speech

Kimmel also warned what would happen if winners overran on their speech; Lakeith Stanfield would scream "get out!" until they left the stage, a nod to the actor's character in the Oscar nominated film Get Out

Gary Oldman scooped the best actor award for his role playing Churchill in Darkest Hour. Accepting the award from Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren, he added "I'd like to salute Winston Churchill who has been marvellous company on what has been an incredible journey"

Guillermo del Toro accepted the Oscar for best director for The Shape of Water from actress Emma Stone, marking the fourth win for a Mexican director in five years

Nicole Kidman presented the Oscar for best original screenplay to Jordan Peele, screenwriter and director of Get Out, who said "I stopped writing this 20 times because I thought it was impossible"

Presenters included Greta Gerwig and Laura Dern, stood here side-by-side to announce the Oscar for best documentary feature to Bryan Fogel and Dan Cogan for Icarus, an exploration of scandals in sports doping testing

Sam Rockwell declared "you guys rock!" to his fellow nominees as he picked up an Oscar for best supporting actor in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Between awards, Kimmel referenced Black Panther as a film that "has been so successful at the box office, it's already the favourite to not get nominated next year"

Mary JBlige, nominated for best supporting actress in Mudbound, performed on stage

Lupita Nyong'o and Kumail Nanjiani presented the award for best production design, whilst voicing their support for children who were brought to the US illegally by their parents, known as Dreamers

Singers Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade perform Remember Me from the animated film Coco with a lavish set

The film went on to win best animated film later in the evening

Rita Moreno, 86, presented the Oscar for best foreign language flm to A Fantastic Woman (Chile), wearing the same dress she wore when she won her Oscar in 1962 for West Side Story

Margot Robbie congratulated Allison Janney for winning the award for best supporting actress as LaVona Golden in I, Tonya

Janney absorbed the news of her Oscar win as she gave her acceptance speech

Star Wars actors Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill and Kelly Marie Tran reunited with robot BB-8 to present animated feature and animated short film

Gina Rodriguez and Tom Holland presented the award for best visual effects to Bladerunner 2049, the sequel to the 1982 sci-fi film

John Nelson, Paul Lambert, Richard R Hoover and Gerd Nefzer held their Oscar aloft as they won for best visual effects in Blade Runner 2049

Mid-way through the ceremony, Jimmy Kimmel led stars including Emily Blunt and Lupita Nyong'o to pay a surprise visit to movie goers at the Chinese theatre next door to the ceremony

Margot Robbie and fellow stars went on to share out snacks to the surprised cinema audience

Artist Common (left) got everyone in the audience to stand up as he and Andra Day sang best original song nominee Stand Up for Something from the film Marshall
