  6. PM needs to show she's serious on talks - Watsonpublished at 19:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Tom Watson

Labour Deputy Leader Tom Watson tells the BBC that having "ignored" opposition parties for two years, the prime minister needs to offer them the concession of ruling out a no-deal Brexit.

"Our concern is that we have a prime minister who had the biggest defeat in history last night, who narrowly escapes a no-confidence motion today, and doesn’t appear to offer any concessions on her red lines," he says.

"There’s clearly a view in the House of Commons that there should be no support for a no-deal Brexit, business is saying that, lots of families up and down the country are saying that. So I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Jeremy Corbyn to say: 'are you being serious?'"

He says Labour is "very amenable to talks". But he asks: "Is she actually going to concede on some of those red lines?"

DUP's Westminster Leader Nigel Dodds says the result tonight shows the importance of the confidence and supply arrangement that is currently in place between the Conservative party and the DUP.

Mr Dodds says the confidence and supply motion is built upon delivering Brexit on shared priorities, which for Northern Ireland is honouring the union and taking control of laws and borders.

He says he hopes that in the next few days they can work together to achieve that ambition.
