Staying in Grendon, Northamptonshire, neighbours are helping clear water and debris from Jon Sayle's home which flooded after "two feet" seeped in overnight.
Water started coming into Sayle's home through the back of the house from about 21:00 BST last night.
Sayle says he now electrical problems, adding: "The sockets don't work, the fridge isn't working and there's damage to the carpet and settees."
Sayles says he went to bed early, as he wanted to have an early night, and a neighbour called him to explain what was happening.
"I went to have a look and saw the water," he tells PA news agency.
"It was unbelievable."
Tim Maher and his partner Carol Findon, from Grendon, Northamptonshire, saw their two-storey home partially submerged overnight with more than a foot (30cm) water.
"I decided to drive down to the bridge and saw the water breaking the banks and coming down the road towards me," Maher tells PA news agency.
"I quickly turned around, drove home and put up a flood barrier we've got up against the door. It kept out a lot of the water but we've had about an inch overnight.
"We've had some damage to the carpets, settees and other furniture. The most difficult bit will be drying out the structure.
"We haven't had much sleep and at least eight houses on our road have been impacted. It would be nice to get a permanent solution to this problem."
Those arriving for Rachel Reeves' speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool pulled out the umbrellas to avoid getting soggy.

Reporting from Marston Moretaine
I've just arrived in the Bedfordshire village of Marston Moretaine where the A421, the main road between Bedford and Milton Keynes, has been closed because of flooding.
The road looks more like a river.
From my vantage point on a bridge over the road I can see a submerged car with what looks like its boot open, which shows just how deep the water is in this spot.
People have been coming to look at the impact of floods, with one man telling me he had to see it with his own eyes.
As well as the road, the rail line from from Bedford to Bletchley has been shut as a result of floods.
Following on from the AA's travel guidance, we can now bring you some pictures of the impact of heavy rainfall and subsequent floods in parts of England this morning.
Some people were forced to abandon their vehicles on the street as heavy rain caused roads to flood, as we reported a little earlier, the London Fire Brigade showed a vehicle stranded in floodwater overnight in Wallington, near Croydon in south London.
The AA is advising drivers to take extra care before travelling today, particularly during rush hours. They also urge drivers to avoid roads that dip significantly, where water is likely to pool and flood.
Chris Wood, from the AA, says driving conditions can "quickly deteriorate" during very heavy rainfall, with drains becoming swamped or blocked.
He adds that standing water on the road can cause problems such as surface spray, reduced visibility and potentially leading to flooding.
“Reduce speed and leave more space between yourself and other vehicles," Wood says, adding that places where roads dip like under railway bridges are more likely to flood.
"If the road ahead is flooded, don’t chance it – floodwater can be deceptively deep so turn around and find another route."

The Met Office has updated its rainfall warnings this morning.
The area covered by the amber warning has been moved southwards, to cover much of central-southern England, as is valid until 21:00 BST today.
Meanwhile, the lesser yellow warning covers a much wider area across England and is valid until just before midnight.
In both areas, rainfall amounts will be highly variable, but there could be a few places within both that see between one and two months worth of rain before the day is through.
High impacts from flooding and disruption are most likely in the amber area.

Tomorrow night's football match between AFC Wimbledon and Newcastle has been postponed after "extensive" floods, AFC Wimbledon says.
In a statement, the club says they "regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed".
AFC Wimbledon's stadium, the club adds, will be closed until further notice.

My drive from Buckinghamshire to London at 03:00 this morning was one of the worst I’ve ever experienced, in terms of weather conditions at least.
Unsurprisingly it’s this area that has seen some of the highest rainfall totals so far today, and some of the biggest impacts.
Around a month’s worth of rain has already fallen for some since midnight.
For my journey, the combination of flooded roads and exceptionally poor visibility during the heavier downpours made it a very unpleasant and hazardous experience, and it’s these sort of conditions that some in the warning-covered areas will continue to face today.
We've just had this photo come in from the London Fire Brigade, which shows a vehicle stranded in floodwater overnight in Wallington, near Croydon in south London:
"If you're out on the roads today, please do not drive through floodwater," is the fire brigade's guidance on X, external.
"A foot of moving water at just 6mph is enough to float a car."
We can now bring you some of the latest guidance from the Met Office and Environment Agency.
Good morning and welcome to our live coverage, as an amber flood warning has been issued covering parts of central and southern England due to heavy rainfall.
Today, an additional yellow warning is in place across large parts of England and Wales.
The Met Office says up to a month's worth of rain could fall in central England, with further flooding and disruption likely.
We'll be bringing you the latest updates on weather alerts and warnings, including any travel disruptions, as soon as we have it.
