    He says operations continued throughout the night. He tells people that even if a road is open to use "extreme caution".

    Rice says they started a "boots on the ground" operation near Camp Mystic. He urges people not to do their own searches.

    He adds that there are grief counsellors for anyone that needs any support and that shelters are operating as well.

    Rice says they are still trying to determine how many tourists and visitors are unaccounted for.

    Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr steps up to the podium next, and acknowledges firstly that "it will be a hard day".

    He says he's been asked how people can help, and describes how a local fund has been set up.

    The Mayor says that the city of Kerrville is thankful for help from city crews, county and for state federal support.

    He then directs people to the city's Facebook page to find useful resources.

    Finishing, Herring Jr is tearful as he asks for prayers for his community.

    Next to update on the catastrophic flooding is Congressman Chip Roy of Texas.

    Congressman Roy says he is here to show his support to the community and thank first responders.

    He says he's been getting calls and been updated about the heroic stories of rescue.

    "Let's focus on finding those who can be found. And then we can always assess, what we need to do later," he says. "But extremely proud of this community. Let's finish the job here over the next few days.

    "Support the local law enforcement, police responders. And pray for pray for the families, particularly those who've lost loved ones".

    Kerr County Sheriff Leitha reminds people to call the call centre or email to alert officials of missing people.

    He says first responders have been working tirelessly and will continue to conduct operations.

    "We will not stop until every single person is found," Leitha says.

    He adds that numbers will change rapidly, and officials can't tell how how long it will take.

    Kerr County Sheriff Larry L. Leitha is speaking first.

    He says authorities have evacuated 850 uninjured people, eight injured people and recovered 27 deceased people. Of those, 18 are adults and nine are children, he says.

    He adds that six of the adults and one child are unidentified.

    "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones," he says.

    US Vice President JD Vance says the nation's "heart breaks for the victims in Texas and their families".

    He describes the floods as an "incomprehensible tragedy" in a post on X.

    "I hope everyone affected knows they're in the prayers of my family, and of millions of Americans," he says.

    He ends his post with a traditional Catholic prayer for Eternal Rest.

  12. Floods in same area swept away 10 teens in 1987published at 15:18 British Summer Time 5 July

    Kerr County's most senior official, Judge Rob Kelly, has said what happened on Friday far surpassed another flood nearly 30 years ago.

    Those flash floods in 1987 killed 10 teenagers on a church camp bus near the town of Comfort, south of Kerr County.

    Back then the waters along the Guadalupe River swelled by 29 feet (8.8m) and swept away a school bus and van that were carrying the teenagers.

    The deadly flash floods in Texas have been caused by severe thunderstorms, fed by tropical moisture from the Gulf.

    These storms became slow-moving, concentrating huge amounts of rain in a relatively small area.

    While large parts of Texas recorded about two inches (50mm) of rain, the wettest areas recorded a torrential deluge of 14.98 inches (380mm) that led to catastrophic flash flooding as rivers burst their banks rapidly.

    The camp director and co-owner of the all-girls Heart O' the Hills camp in Kerr county has died in the "catastrophic" flooding, according to a statement from the camp.

    Jane Ragsdale, described as the "heart and soul" of Heart O'Hills, "did not make it", a post shared on the camp's official website on Friday said.

    "We are mourning the loss of a woman who influenced countless lives and was the definition of strong and powerful," the statement read.

    The camp, which sits along the Guadalupe River, wasn't in session and "most of those who were on camp at the time have been accounted for and are on high ground", the camp said.

    Ragsdale, who started off as a camper then a counsellor, became co-owner of the camp in 1976.

  16. Melania Trump says her 'heart goes out to parents in Texas at difficult time'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 5 July

    First Lady Melania Trump says her "heart goes out to the parents in Texas during this difficult time".

    In a social media post, she tells those affected by the floods that she is "holding you in my thoughts and sending prayers for strength, comfort, and resilience".

    Earlier on, Melania's husband, US President Donald Trump, called the flooding "shocking" and "terrible".

  17. Kerrville police pledges to keep search going until everyone accounted forpublished at 14:12 British Summer Time 5 July

    It's just gone 08:00 in Kerr County, and the City of Kerrville Police Department says its teams have worked through the night as it vows they will continue "until we find all of our citizens".

    In an update posted on Facebook, the police department says: "Hundreds of first responders are here with resources from throughout the state to help us.

    "Our thoughts remain with those who are unaccounted for and their loved ones. They are our focus and will remain so. We will post significant updates throughout the day.

    "Please refrain from spreading unfounded information and continue to follow trusted news sources for accurate information."

  18. New flood watch issued as threat of heavy rain and flooding continuespublished at 13:51 British Summer Time 5 July

    Kerrville City Hall has issued a new flood watch saying that the threat of heavy rain and flooding continues across parts of the county.

    "Additional rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches and isolated amounts of up to 10 inches are possible within the flood watch area," Kerrville City Hall said in a post on Facebook, citing the National Weather Service.

    It added that "confidence is low on exactly where the disturbance will move across the region".

    The new flood watch will last until Saturday 19:00 CDT (01:00 BST).

  19. Families using social media to track down unaccounted relativespublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 5 July

    The Kerrville Breaking News group on Facebook is a forum where locals often post restaurant recommendations, upcoming events and resources in the area.

    But on Friday evening, it was filled with posts from families who have relatives unaccounted for from the flooding.

    One pleading mother shared that she hadn't been able to get in touch with her daughter and son-in-law, whose home was swept away from a road near Kerrville Lake.

    Another woman in Austin, Texas, posted that her grandparents living along the Guadalupe River hadn't been heard from since yesterday.

  20. At least five victims are from Houston, county judge sayspublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 5 July

    There are limited details so far about the people that have been killed in the floods. But a county judge has said at least five people were from the Houston area of Texas.

    Posting on social media Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo says: "Today, my heart aches for our neighbours in Kerr County.

    "The violent surge of flood waters is something we are all too familiar with. I pray that emergency personnel are able to promptly find the young girls missing from Camp Mystic."

    Hidalgo says it has resources available to fulfil any requests for help.

    "Harris County mourns the victims - five of whom have been confirmed from Houston/Harris County," she adds.

    "All of Texas is impacted by this tragic event."
