Watch: Germany grapples with another Christmas market attack

    Tonight's events took place at a Christmas market in Magdeburg in central Germany.

    It's roughly an hour and a half's drive from the capital, Berlin. The annual Christmas market is a big tourist drawcard for the city.

    The city is the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt and lies on the Elbe river, with a population of about 240,000.

    The prime minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, is on his way to the state capital of Magdeburg, German broadcaster MDR reports.

    The broadcaster reports he said: "This is a terrible event, especially now in the days before Christmas."
