A couple of hours after it was taken the US embassy in Kyiv announced it would temporarily close after receiving "specific information of a potential significant air attack on 20 November".
While the warning is not unprecedented, it follows an escalation in rhetoric from Russia after reports that the White House has granted Ukraine permission to use US-made long-range missiles against targets in Russia.
The US embassy in Kyiv says the closure is out of an "abundance of caution".
Last night, the embassy warned that "persistent Russian attacks targeting civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine may result in power outages, loss of heating, and disruption of municipal services".
It warned of the risk from missile attacks and falling debris, and said US citizens should exercise "heightened caution over the next several weeks" and advices them to stock up on essentials.
