Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

Zou's barrister Mark Cotter KC says "the road to rehabilitation may be a long one", but adds there are "aspects" of the pre-sentence report that show "he is reflecting on what has taken place".

He also asks the court to consider Zou's age, saying that with a younger person, there is a greater chance of change.

There is evidence Zou, 28, will not be dangerous indefinitely, the defence says.

  2. Zou offered to be chemically castrated, court hearspublished at 12:42 British Summer Time

    Daniel Sandford and Claire Ellison
Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

The judge says Zou had "limited, if any idea of the meaning of consent".

The court also hears that a pre-sentence report assessed that Zou "was a high risk of serious harm to the public, particularly lone females".

The report says he has minimal insight into his offending.

It also says Zou offered to be chemically castrated in the hope of receiving a lighter sentence and never to have sex again, but it adds that this offer was not said in recognition of the harm he caused.

Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

Corinne Bramwell for the prosecution tells the judge that after Zou was convicted, a woman known as Female D came forward and identified herself as one of the previously unidentified women to have been raped in China.

This will be the first time she tells her story in public.

The victim's statement says she was "terrified" she had a sexually transmitted disease after the rape, and had a HIV test.

"Nightmares haunted me," she says, adding that she was unable to be alone.

We're still hearing the second victim personal statement being read out in court.

She says the attack has impacted her university life.

"I can't attend in-person lectures, I watch all lectures on recordings. My social life is impacted and I'm reluctant to go to new social gatherings as I have no trust in others," she says.

She says she has lost interest in the majority of things she used to enjoy, and while Zou's conviction brought some short-term relief, "it has definitely exacerbated my mental health issues".

    Daniel Sandford and Claire Ellison
Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

We're hearing a second victim's personal statement being read out in court.

It begins with the victim describing how they suffered with bipolar disorder before the rape.

She says that after the rape she had trouble sleeping, adding: "I often wondered 'Why me?'"

She says she felt confused about her situation and why the perpetrator would do such a thing - and that her anxiety became overwhelming.

She says she reported the crime, but "because the case was not immediately filed", she says she felt "a great deal of pressure".

"In the end I decided to withdraw my report," she says, but adds "the anxiety inside me never went away... I believed the perpetrator was a repeat offender".

"I began posting about the assault on social media," she says, describing how some people blamed her for going to Zou's house - she then deleted the post, saying she could not bear it.

  8. Victim says she 'struggles to trust anyone'published at 12:11 British Summer Time

    Daniel Sandford
Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

The victim describes how Zou tried to stay in touch with her on social media after the rape.

"Years have passed, but I still can't read news about him or see a photograph of him without feeling sick... an overwhelming urge to scrub myself clean... I was consumed by guilt. Why hadn't I spoken up sooner?"

The statement says that what happened that night "shattered" her, and after that point she "became deeply pessimistic and an insecure person".

"To this day I struggle to trust anyone," she says, adding "what happened that night is etched into my soul forever".

"I will never forgive him," the victim says in the statement being read to the court.

    Daniel Sandford
Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

More now from the victim statement we are hearing being read out in court.

"Stumbling out of the room I found myself in a completely unknown place... exposed and violated without my consent," the victim says.

"Even now, thinking about it makes me physically sick," she says, adding: "I was too afraid to confront him."

"For a long time afterwards I blamed myself, wondering if I had given him the wrong impression," she says. "I hated him, but I also hated myself for failing to protect my own body."

She says that alone in a place far from home she had "no-one to turn to".

    "He preyed on my vulnerability."

The court is now hearing a victim's personal statement.

The victim says she met Zou in 2021.

"He told me he was hurt by others in relationships. He told me I was the perfect girlfriend choice. He said he was not that rich so following on from this I paid for dinner, food delivery and drinks," she says.

She describes inviting Zou for dinner with friends. Afterwards, she says, "he just took it upon himself to follow me and my friends to our place of drinking".

"Later that night I experienced for the first time a loss of consciousness," she adds.

She then describes waking up to find him thrusting against her.

Of the 10 women who Zou has been found guilty of raping, only two have been identified by police. The BBC has spoken to them.

Both are Chinese nationals who had been studying in London. The women, who we are calling 'Beth' and 'Clara', got to know each other on social media after Beth posted about her experience.

Beth was raped by Zou in 2023 and had tried to report the crime to the Metropolitan Police soon afterwards. But then she decided not to pursue things because she felt unsure of UK law and had been left feeling discouraged after her initial interaction with the police, which included a poor translation of her 999 call.

"Back then I didn't know [Zou's name]. I didn't know his address, I could only give general information," she said. In frustration, Beth posted a warning on social media about what had happened to her.

Chinese student, Clara, said she "immediately" knew this was the same man who had drugged and raped her after a night out in London's Chinatown, two years before.

Every detail in Beth's post pointed to the same man, said Clara: "He has a Guangdong accent, he looks honest and he wears a Rolex submariner watch."

Beth encouraged Clara to report what had happened to her to the police. Months later, police contacted Beth to say they were re-investigating the case. Clara had come forward. On Zou's seized devices, police had also found a video featuring Beth.

The Met has since expressed regret over how it initially handled her allegations.

    Daniel Sandford
Reporting from Inner London Crown Court

Judge Rosina Cottage KC is on the bench. She says that Zhenhao Zou has only just arrived in a van from prison.

Zou's lawyers will need to see him briefly, so the sentencing hearing will now start at around 11:15 BST.

She says her sentencing remarks will be quite long - about 45 minutes - and if she does not have time to deliver all the remarks before lunch she will start her sentencing remarks at 14:00 BST.

Five jurors, three women and two men, have returned to watch the sentencing. They delivered their verdict in March.

  19. Zou's sentencing is yet to startpublished at 10:39 British Summer Time

We're still waiting for the sentencing to begin at Inner London Crown Court.

The hearing was due to start at 10:00 BST, but a delay in Zou arriving at the court from prison has held up proceedings.

Twenty-three more women have come forward to the police with allegations against Zhenhao Zou after he was found guilty in London in March of drugging and raping 10 women across two continents.

Police said at the conclusion of his trial they had video evidence, filmed by Zou, of potentially 50 more victims - and they have been trying to trace these women. Detectives now say, however, that they believe Zou's "offending group is far greater".

Two women who contacted police in March with new allegations have spoken to the BBC World Service. One said Zou raped her in his hometown in China, after spiking her drink which left her conscious but unable to speak or move.

The other said Zou drugged her too - in London - and that she had woken up to find him filming himself sexually assaulting her. One of the women making new allegations, who we are calling Alice, told the BBC that Zou had assaulted her in London in 2021, but that she had only felt able to go to police after his trial earlier this year.

A second trial for the convicted rapist has not been ruled out and there is "certainly a case" to discuss with the Crown Prosecution Service, given the numbers of women coming forward, said Cdr Kevin Southworth - who leads public protection at the Metropolitan Police.
