Wicked proves a box office hit in 2024

We may not have Barbie or Oppenheimer this year, but there are plenty of other blockbusters that could show up among this year's nominees.

Box office smashes in 2024 include Wicked, which follows the origin story of Elphaba, Oz's Wicked Witch of the West.

Also in the race is Gladiator II, although many of its longlist mentions are in the technical categories, and it is not being considered for best film.

Other sequels which cleaned up financially include Dune: Part Two, the second instalment of the sandy sci-fi adaptation, which is likely to be nominated for best film as well as several technical awards.

Elsewhere, box office juggernaut Inside Out 2 will probably feature in the best animated film category alongside the popular Despicable Me 4, The Wild Robot and Moana 2.

But box office takings aren't everything. The above animated films could be beaten by a much smaller contender - the charming Latvian film Flow, about a cat who must work with other animals to survive after a flood. The film won the Golden Globe in this category.
