Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov tells state TV correspondent Pavel Zarubin that Trump will meet Putin at the steps of the Russian president's aircraft upon his arrival in Alaska.

Peskov was speaking to Zarubin on board a plane, presumably Putin's, in Magadan.

He says Putin's plane will depart from Magadan "punctually" as scheduled to arrive in Alaska at 11:00 local time (20:00 BST).

Apart from the Ukraine war, Putin and Trump will discuss many other issues including "irritants" in US-Russian relations and potential economic projects, the spokesperson adds.

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen Dan Caine are headed to Alaska for the summit today, according to the Pentagon.

Also expected to be present is the head of US-European Command, Gen Alexus Grynkewich to "provide military advice... as President Trump tries to bring this war to a peaceful close", a senior Nato official has said.

  5. What are the key timings for today's meeting?published at 15:01 British Summer Time 15 August

As we've been reporting, Trump is now aboard Air Force One on his way to Alaska for his meeting with Putin.

On the original schedule released by the White House earlier, Trump was due to set off around 06:45 local time (11:45 BST) - but wheels up ended up being around an hour and 20 minutes later.

If we're still going by the original schedule, Trump and Putin are due to start discussions around 11:00 local time in Alaska (20:00 BST).

Trump is then scheduled to leave Alaska at around 17:45 local (02:45 BST Saturday), and head back to Washington DC.

We've not received an official schedule from the Russian delegation.

  6. Putin makes pit stop in Magadan ahead of Alaska summitpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 15 August

Vladimir Putin is on his way to Alaska but he made a quick stop in Magadan, a remote port city in Russia’s far east.

Perched on the Sea of Okhotsk, it's better known internationally as a former hub of Stalin’s Gulag prison system.

State TV made sure the cameras caught him strolling through local production facilities, looking every bit the hands-on leader. Putin has been taken on a tour of a new line of Russian dietary supplements proudly presented as part of Moscow’s drive for “complete independence” from Western imports.

But while the rhetoric is all about breaking free from Western supply chains, every single product on display was neatly packaged with English-language labels.

Putin has a busy schedule before he continues his journey to Anchorage - Russian state media also report he visited a fish processing factory and a sports complex in Magadan.

And he will later lay flowers at a memorial honouring Soviet-American aviation cooperation during the Second World War.

  7. Best-case scenario is ceasefire followed by more talkspublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 15 August

    Vitaliy Shevchenko
Russia editor, BBC Monitoring reporting from Anchorage

With no major agreements expected to be signed in Anchorage, the realistic best-case scenario we can expect today is a ceasefire followed by more talks, possibly involving Volodymyr Zelensky.

Worst case: Donald Trump offers Ukrainian territory to Vladimir Putin, Volodymyr Zelensky disagrees and the fighting continues.

The good news is this has been another relatively quiet 24 hours in Ukraine, as if the Russians don't want to anger President Trump ahead of the talks by bombing civilians.

In the past, this quiet was shattered by more Russian attacks shortly after talks with the Americans, leading Donald Trump to say he suspected that Vladimir Putin was merely "tapping him along".

Ukrainians are hoping that this time will be very different.

We're now hearing from Volodymyr Zelensky who - a few minutes ago - said "we are counting on America" ahead of the Alaska summit.

In a statement on X, Zelensky echoes Trump's comments saying that today's meeting is "indeed, high stakes", adding that the summit "should open up a real path toward a just peace" and a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the US and Russia.

He says Ukraine is sending reinforcements to halt Russia's gains in eastern Ukraine, including in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions - two of the territories likely to take centre stage during today's talks.

He ends the statement calling for an end for the war and Russia to take the "necessary steps".

  9. Russian foreign minister wore ‘USSR’ shirt for his Alaska arrivalpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 15 August

Several members of Russia’s delegation have already arrived in Alaska.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Russian Direct Investment Fund head Kirill Dmitriev, and Finance Minister Anton Siluanov reached Anchorage last night.

Lavrov caught journalists’ attention with an unusual clothing choice — a long-sleeve shirt emblazoned with the acronym CCCP, Russian for “USSR.”

Given Alaska’s Russian past and the sensitivity of a meeting where Ukrainian territory may be discussed, the shirt could be seen as a provocative symbol.

When a Russian reporter asked if he was feeling any pre-summit nerves, Lavrov replied calmly: “What’s that?” - as if the concept were unfamiliar to him.

The foreign minister said Russia has “arguments” and a “clear position” that President Putin intends to present to Donald Trump.

  10. Trump says Putin could face 'economically severe' consequencespublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 15 August

More from Air Force One now, where a reporter asks Trump about his comments from earlier this week - when he said Putin could face "very severe consequences" if he refuses to end the war

"Economically severe, yes. It will be very severe," Trump says.

"I'm not doing this for my health," he adds. "I don't need it. I'd like to focus on our country.

"But I'm doing this to save a lot of lives," Trump says.

"Yeah, very severe," he adds, before thanking reporters and ending the questions.

  11. Territorial swap 'will be discussed' but final decision lies with Ukraine - Trumppublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 15 August

The US president, asked by a reporter if territorial swaps are on the table, says: "They will be discussed, but I've got to let Ukraine make that decision, and I think they'll make a proper decision."

"But I'm not here to negotiate for Ukraine," Trump says, adding that if he weren't president Putin would take all of Ukraine, adding "but he's not going to do it".

A reporter then asks Trump about the possibility of the US providing security guarantees for Ukraine.

"Maybe," Trump replies, there's a "possibility" along with "Europe and other countries", but he says not as part of Nato.

On the question of whether they will discuss economic opportunities, Trump says "if we make progress".

  12. We won't do business until war is over, Trump sayspublished at 13:57 British Summer Time 15 August

We can now bring you some fresh comments from President Donald Trump, who has been speaking to reporters travelling to Alaska with him on Air Force One.

He notes that Vladimir Putin is bringing "a lot of business people" with him from Russia, adding: "I like that because they want to do business."

"But we're not doing business until we get the war settled," he says. "The war's got to stop and the killing's got to stop."

Trump says the US is the "hottest country" in the world, and Putin "wants a piece of that" because Russia is "not hot, economically".

He says Putin is a "smart guy" and adds there is a "good respect level on both sides".

Asked about Russia's continued attacks on Ukraine, Trump says Putin thinks it "helps him make a better deal", but in reality "it actually hurts him".

  13. Ukrainian worries summit will legitimise Putinpublished at 13:44 British Summer Time 15 August

    Zhanna Bezpiatchuk
BBC Ukrainian Service reporter, in Kyiv

I’ve been finding out how Ukrainians feel about the upcoming meeting in Alaska.

Iryna Kozyreva, who lives in Kyiv and whose son is a prisoner of war (POW) being held by Russia, is worried that the summit will give a boost to President Vladimir Putin.

“If the meeting of the presidents takes place in Alaska, Putin will receive a coveted legitimisation of his criminal war,” she says.

But she does hope that one outcome of the meeting might be a prisoner-swap deal.

“The only thing that would make Ukrainians even a little happier is an agreement to exchange everyone for everyone,” she says. “Primarily women, seriously ill and seriously injured survivors of the terrorist attack in Olenivka.”

In July 2022, dozens of Ukrainian prisoners were killed in explosions at a Russian-run POW camp in Olenivka, in an occupied area of Ukraine. Iryna’s son was injured in the incident.

The AP news agency reported that internal UN analysis concluded that Russia was responsible for the deaths.

She adds that her advice to President Trump would be to arm Ukraine with more weapons and to impose stronger sanctions on Russia and its allies.

  14. Ukrainian military signals they're by no means down and outpublished at 13:33 British Summer Time 15 August

    Vitaliy Shevchenko
    Russia editor, BBC Monitoring

Reports that Ukrainian drones have sunk a Russian cargo ship carrying drone parts and explosives from Iran just hours before the Alaska talks are extremely important for Kyiv.

Officials there will be hoping that President Trump will see them as a sign of the Ukrainian military being by no means down and out - despite claims to the contrary that Vladimir Putin will no doubt make in Alaska.

  15. Ukraine says it's sunk a vessel carrying supplies to Russia from Iranpublished at 13:26 British Summer Time 15 August

Ukrainian forces say they have sunk a vessel in the southern Russian port of Olya after carrying out a drone strike.

It's said to have been carrying spare parts for Shahed-type drones and ammunition from Iran.

The ship, named Port Olya-4, regularly transits the Caspian Sea, bringing cargo between Iran and Russia, according to the US Treasury Department and Ukrainian military intelligence.

Last year sanctions on Iranian producers of drones and missiles were expanded, in addition to those already in place on selling drones to Russia for use in its war against Ukraine.

  20. Trump ramps up the dramapublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 15 August

    Tom Bateman
    US State Department correspondent

Trump's short post on social media a few minutes ago - "HIGH STAKES!!!" - raises expectations and the sense of drama.

The US president will land at a Cold War-era American air-base in Anchorage, followed shortly afterwards by President Putin.

Stepping foot on US soil, beyond UN meetings, for the first time in two decades, Putin in a blow ends his isolation and re-enters the world stage as far as it is possible to get from Europe - side-by-side with the American leader.

Before any words are even exchanged with President Trump, Kyiv is seeing this this as a win for Moscow, as it tries to avert the risk of Ukraine’s future being decided without them.
