The suburbs of New York City are not exactly Republican territory - but it is where Donald Trump will make his return to the campaign trail after another apparent attempt on his life over the weekend.

The former president spent the night at his former full-time residence - Trump Tower in Manhattan - and will speak tonight at 19:00 EST (00:00 BST) from the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island.

More than 60,000 tickets have been requested for the rally, although the facility only seats 16,000, ABC7 New York reports. Local Democrats are expected to counter-protest the event.

Recent polls suggest that Trump has very little hope of winning the state but he believes he can make inroads with voters unhappy with inflation, crime and the influx of migrants.

Control of the US House of Representatives is also expected to run through New York, where Democrats lost key seats that cost them their House majority.

As has been the case since the first attempt on his life, the Republican nominee will speak from behind bullet-proof glass.

With less than eight weeks to go until polling day, the Democratic and Republican nominees are hitting the campaign trail with speeches and rallies today.

First up, Vice-President Kamala Harris will speak at an event of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in a bid to gather support from voters, before her campaign later holds a fundraising event in New York City with Matt Damon and Lin-Manuel Miranda in attendance.

Tickets for the event cost $25,000 per person, according to Bloomberg News.

Former President Donald Trump will also be in New York later for a rally, the first since an apparent assassination attempt on Sunday.

Away from the campaign trail, a much-anticipated announcement from the Federal Reserve is due at 14:00 EST (19:00 BST), in which the US central bank is poised to lower interest rates for the first time in four years. The economy is a major issue for voters and many will be watching this moment closely.

Around the same time, the US Senate Select Committee on Intelligence will hold a hearing discussing foreign threats to elections in 2024.
