Summary

  • Prosecutors say they are in the early stages of investigating a so-called "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter

  • They stress they are not investigating anyone specifically at the moment

  • Italian authorities confirm that the final missing body found on Friday was that of 18-year-old Hannah Lynch, the daughter of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch

  • They also say the yacht, called the Bayesian, likely sunk because of a downburst. This is a localised, powerful wind that descends from a thunderstorm and spreads out unpredictably

  • Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 people survived the sinking, including a one-year-old child and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares

Cartosio explains that the prosecutor's office is currently investigating a so-called "crime hypothesis" of culpable shipwreck and manslaughter, although they are not investigating anyone specifically at the moment, and it will take time.

He emphasises that they are in the very early stages of the investigation, and therefore, they are not ruling anything out at this point.

  2. 'Our most heartfelt thanks to divers'published at 09:32 British Summer Time 24 August

"It is a very grave tragedy," Cartosio says, adding that in order to reduce the dimension of the tragedy he called on the expertise of divers who "carried out a very difficult mission indeed".

"Our most heartfelt thanks to these rescuers, these divers," he says, adding his gratitude to the coastguard who have cooperated with authorities continuously.

He describes their work as an "extraordinary effort".

  3. Prosecutor confirms body found yesterday was Hannah Lynchpublished at 09:28 British Summer Time 24 August

    Reporting from Sicily

Cartosio explains that the coastguard was called at 04:38 local time, but by the time they arrived, the yacht had already sunk, and there were some survivors, most of whom were rescued by a nearby boat.

Cartosio confirmed the names of the victims. The first body recovered was that of the boat's chef, Recaldo Thomas, and it was immediately clear that finding alive any of the six missing people would be very difficult.

Four of the victims were recovered on August 21st: Jonathan William Bloomer and his wife, and Christopher Morvillo and his wife.

All of them were found inside the boat by the diving teams. Another victim, Mike Lynch, was retrieved on 22 August. His daughter's body, Hannah, was recovered on August 23rd, which deeply moved the rescue team, prompting a spontaneous round of applause.

We're now hearing from Italian officials, who have just begun delivering a news conference in Termini Imerse, Sicily.

Chief Prosecutor of Termini Imerese, Ambrogio Cartosio, thanks members of the media for attending the conference, saying that the aim is to give more information about the Bayesian sinking.

He says the news conference is necessary given the legitimate interest in the incident. He also says he has disputed Italian legislation which says prosecutors cannot make comments before an inquiry is launched.

He stresses there are things that officials cannot address at the moment.

Aside from the 10 crew travelling on the Bayesian at the time of its sinking, there were 12 guests travelling on board for a vacation on the luxury yacht.

The trip seems to have been a celebratory excursion spearheaded by tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, who had recently been acquitted in a decade-long legal battle in the US, where he’d been accused of fraud.

Friends and colleagues have described the 59-year-old man as a person who was deeply loyal to those who stood by him in this difficult time. This trip, it seems, was to thank those who had helped him.

Chris Morvillo, a lawyer for Clifford Chance - the law firm that represented Lynch - is among the people who went missing on Monday. So was his wife, Neda Morvillo, an American jewellery designer.

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at the same law firm, also worked on Lynch's case. Both she and her partner were invited to the yacht and were rescued when it sank.

Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer was a defence witness for Lynch in the trial. He was on board the Bayesian with his wife, Judy Bloomer. Neither of them survived.

Charlotte Golunski, board director of Luminance, an AI platform founded by Lynch, was also rescued from the wreck, along with her husband and baby daughter.

Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares survived, but his daughter Hannah is thought to have died after divers recovered what is believed to be her body in the wreckage of a luxury yacht.

  8. How underwater teams used 'robots' to search sunken yachtpublished at 08:33 British Summer Time 24 August

One of the tools deployed to help rescuers access the wreck in were remote controlled underwater vehicles.

Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) can operate on a seabed at a depth of up to 300m (984ft) for up to seven hours.

In comparison, divers are only able to search the wreck - which is at a depth of 50m - for up to 10 minutes per dive.

The devices are equipped with advanced technology allowing them to search the seabed, and can record detailed videos and images using its camera and lights.

  9. A timeline of the search and rescue operationpublished at 08:15 British Summer Time 24 August

    On Monday:

    • At about 05:00 local time (04:00 BST) the Bayesian yacht sank during a freak weather event
    • Of the 22 people who were on board, 15 were rescued
    • Seven people were reported missing
    • The body of Recaldo Thomas, a chef who was working on the boat, was recovered
    • The first search of the wreck failed as divers struggled to access the wreckage

On Tuesday, divers were able to reach the lounge of the yacht but their path to the cabins was blocked by "a world of objects".

On Wednesday, divers found the bodies of fifth of the six missing passengers, and recovered four of them to shore.

On Thursday morning, a fifth body was recovered from the wreckage.

On Friday morning, the body of the sixth missing passenger was recovered, believed to be that of Mike Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Italian authorities are set to hold a news conference this morning after the sinking of a luxury yacht in a violent, freak storm off Sicily on Monday.

Yesterday, divers concluded their efforts to recover the six missing people from the Bayesian wreck with the discovery of a final body, believed to be that of 18-year-old Hannah Lynch.

Hannah is the the daughter of British tech baron Mike Lynch, whose body was found on Thursday, along with those of four others.

A seventh body - that of Recaldo Thomas, the yacht's chef - was recovered from the sea on Monday.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 people survived the sinking, including a one-year-old child and Hannah’s mother, Angela Bacares.
