    People are being asked to avoid a Cornish village that was struck by a mini tornado on Thursday.

    Cornwall Council warns people should take extra caution at the weekend after several properties were damaged in in Quintrell Downs, near Newquay, during the violent winds.

    The authority says: "Due to the risk of flying debris and further damage over the coming days, please avoid the area.

    "If you need to access a property, please take extreme caution.

    "Signs will be put in place in the area."

  3. Fallen tree blocks train line - GWRpublished at 08:22 Greenwich Mean Time

    The train line between Plymouth and Newton Abbot in Devon is blocked by a fallen tree.

    Great Western Railway (GWR) said train services would face "considerable disruption".

    Services may be delayed or revised and disruption is expected until 10:30 GMT, the company says.

    It advises commuters to use the Stagecoach GOLD bus route stopping at Paignton, Totnes (Station), Ivybridge and Plymouth (Royal Parade).

    The National Grid has said 970 properties are currently without power in Devon.

    Areas affected include Okehampton, Hatherleigh, Witheridge, Tiverton and Bovey Tracey.

    GoCornwall Bus has asked school students to "make their way" to Gunnislake railway station due to a fallen tree blocking the road between St Annes Chapel and Gunnislake.

    In a post on X, external, it apologised for any inconvenience caused to the CAL-G-79 school bus service.

    Devon Highways is responding to numerous weather related incidents across the county.

    Jen Murphy, from Devon Highways Control, told BBC Radio Devon drivers should take extra care when on the roads.

    “We’ve not had to close any of our bridges yet, it’s something we’re continuing to monitor but our highest wind speeds have been at the top of Exmoor.

    “It’s a combination of the heavy rain leading the ground to be very wet and then the high winds following, so that’s why we’re going to have a lot of trees down.

    “We thankfully don’t seem to have too many flood warnings across the county at the minute."

    She added: “We’re urging people to drive with care, expect tree debris and look out for surface water."

    There's a fallen tree blocking the A390 at St Anns Chapel in Cornwall in both directions from All Saints Park to Delaware Road.

    Trains services are at a standstill between Newton Abbot and Plymouth due to problems with the signals at Totnes and a fallen tree on the line.

    Parts of Cornwall were hit with power cuts overnight. National Grid said homes and businesses in Bude and Liskeard were without poweit restored.

    The National Grid said Storm Éowyn would bring strong winds to the South West, South Wales and the Midlands over the next few days and it would impact power supplies. It said there would be "extra teams on standby".

    National Grid said: "The electricity network is built to be resilient, but extreme weather can impact power supplies.

    "We will be working around the clock to restore supplies quickly if severe weather causes disruption, with extra teams on standby."

    The A361 in Ilfracombe northbound is blocked due to a fallen tree from the A3123 (Mullacott Cross Roundabout) to Kingsley Avenue.

    People are being advised to approach with care.

    In St Marys, in the Isles of Scilly, gusts of 75mph were recorded overnight. In Plymouth gusts of up to 68mph were recorded and 68mph in Culdrose.

    The strongest gusts are likely to be over the next few hours but they will transfer eastwards, as will the rain.

    The A377 in Kings Nympton from the South Molton turn off (Kings Nympton) to Pool Lane (Burrington) is closed in both directions due to a fallen tree.

    And there's reports of a fallen tree on the A379 anticlockwise around Exminster Hill in Powderham.

    The Tamar Bridge was closed to high sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes earlier because of wind speeds across the main deck gusting up to 60mph.

    All restrictions were lifted just before 05:00 GMT as the winds eased.
