    In a follow up to the post we just reported on, police say the Civil Aviation Authority has been informed of the incident and "the airport has suspended operations as an investigation is carried out".

    It adds travellers should follow updates from Birmingham Airport's X account, external for further information.

    Birmingham Airport's website remains down more than an hour after it first announced its runway was closed on X.

    Passengers have been told to check their flight status before coming to the airport, but the website and its live departures board still appear to be inaccessible.

    The airport has issued no further updates on X since.

    We’re looking at the closure of the runway at Birmingham Airport as a result of what it says is an "aircraft incident".

    We have just seen some images, posted on X, that show a small plane on the runway surrounded by emergency vehicles. Its tail is sitting on the tarmac.

    The plane is a Beech B200 Super King Air belonging to Woodgate Aviation, a charter firm based at Belfast International Airport.

    Records on flight-tracking site FlightRadar 24 show a similar plane departed from Birmingham at 12:17 BST.

    It was due to fly to Belfast but turned around minutes after departure and headed back towards the airport. After circling, it landed at around 12:57.

    The reason for this is still unclear but we're looking for updates.

    EMA is located north-east of Birmingham, about a 45 minute drive from Birmingham Airport.

    Here's the full statement from Birmingham Airport, published a short time ago on X:

    "Following an aircraft incident, the runway is temporarily closed.

    "We apologise for the inconvenience this will cause.

    "We will keep passengers already at the airport informed and those due to travel later today are advised to check the status of their flight before coming to the airport.

    "We will continue to issue updates when we can."
