Ever loved the Sun so much you wish it wouldn’t set?

Well, some parts of the world will be experiencing what’s called the midnight sun today, which means exactly that. The Sun doesn’t set.

Areas towards the North Pole, including parts of Finland, Iceland and Canada have been experiencing this natural phenomenon for many weeks or months.

One such place is Svalbard in northern Norway, where the Sun has not set since the end of April and will not set again until part-way through August.

However, it doesn’t mean these places have sunshine all day for the entire year. Areas towards the North Pole can experience weeks and months in winter when the Sun doesn’t rise.

  17. What does solstice mean?published at 04:44 British Summer Time 21 June

The term solstice comes from the Latin word solstitium, meaning ‘sun standing still’.

Some prefer the more teutonic term sunturn to describe the event.

That’s because astrologers say the sun seems to stand still at the point on the horizon where it appears to rise and set, before moving off in the reverse direction.
