Watch: From laughter to anger, how the meeting spiralled

  1. Trump: We'll continue sending weapons, but hopefully not many morepublished at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

The BBC's Myroslava Petsa is part of the press pack in the Oval Office.

She sends us a video over, in which she's heard asking Trump: "Mr President, are you going to send more arms to Ukraine in case there is no peace?"

Trump replies: "We're not looking forward to sending a lot of arms, we're looking forward to getting the war finished.

He adds: "The answer is yes. But hopefully we won't have to send much because I'm looking forward to getting it done quickly."

The US president says he "appreciate[s] the [minerals] agreement because we needed what they had", adding: "Our country is now treated fairly."

    Breaking

More now from the press pack in the Oval Office, who report Trump saying that it would be great if he and Zelensky can stop the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Zelensky then says there should be "no compromises" with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the negotiation of a peace deal.

He shows Trump pictures of war atrocities, and adds: "I think President Trump is on our side."

  3. Leaders to sign minerals deal at news conference, Trump sayspublished at 16:54 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

As we mentioned earlier, we'll be sent footage of the public part of the meeting between Trump and Zelensky after it's happened - and will bring you more in depth coverage of their Q&A with reporters then.

Reporters in the room are beginning to send over some key lines, however.

    Here's a quick look.

Trump says he and Zelensky are going to sign the US-proposed minerals deal with Ukraine during their joint news conference in the East Room of the White House - scheduled for 13:00 EST (18:00 GMT).

He describes the deal as "very fair".

    Hang tight for further updates.

  4. First pictures from the Oval Officepublished at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

We're starting to see some of the first pictures of the meeting between Trump and Zelensky.

The pair are sat in the centre of the Oval Office, surrounded by a cluster of officials, camera crews and reporters.

We'll bring you updates on their discussion as soon as we can. In the meantime, here's a peek at the action:

  5. Up next: Leaders to take questions from reporterspublished at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

We don't currently have a live feed of Trump and Zelensky's whereabouts, but they should be seated in the Oval Office by now, along with their teams of officials.

They're expected to kick things off by taking questions from a small group of reporters allowed into the room.

We won't be able to stream this live, but will bring you footage of the event after it's happened, alongside text updates on the key lines.

The doors will then shut for private discussions, after which point we won't hear from the either leaders until 13:00 EST (18:00 GMT) for the now routine joint press conference.

    Stay with us.

  6. Will it be a good meeting? It's thumbs-up from Trumppublished at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

Donald Trump, stood between two US soldiers, gives a thumbs up

Before President Zelensky arrived at the White House, President Trump - who waited briefly outside before greeting his Ukrainian counterpart - was asked by a reporter if he felt it was going to be a good meeting.

Trump gave no words in response, and flashed a thumbs-up instead.

  7. Trump dodges Putin question, leaders head for Oval Officepublished at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

Just before the two leaders made their way inside the West Wing, the US president appeared to tell reporters "he's all dressed up", in reference to Zelensky.

Trump is asked what his message is to Vladimir Putin, but he ignores the question. Instead, he raises his fist, before ushering Zelensky inside.

As we just reported, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky has just arrived at the White House.

Several dozen reporters, including photographers precariously perched on ladders, were there to witness his arrival.

Donald Trump was on hand to greet him, although from my vantage point I was unable to hear exactly what he said. We will find out shortly.

Reporters were screaming questions in his direction, most notably: "What does Ukraine get out of all this?"

  9. It all starts with a handshakepublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

This is the third leaders' visit to the White House this week, so we're starting to get a good hold on the choreography.

As has become customary, Trump and Zelensky share a handshake as they flash smiles in the direction of a scrum of press cameras stationed outside the West Wing.

It's a shorter handshake than was shared with Macron and Starmer earlier this week.

The pair then head inside together, bound for the Oval Office, where we expect them to begin talks shortly.

As we wait for this meeting between Donald Trump and Zelensky to get under way, I get an alert on my phone that, 4,867 miles (7,833km) away in northern and eastern Ukraine, the near nightly air raid sirens are ringing.

A reminder of the urgency of their meeting today.

  12. Scene is set for Zelensky's arrivalpublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

As our reporter at the White House told us moments ago, a guard of honour is waiting for Zelensky's arrival.

President Zelensky's motorcade is due to arrive outside the Oval Office shortly.

I’m standing in front of the West Wing of the White House alongside at least 100 reporters and photographers, including a sizeable Ukrainian contingent.

A guard of honour is waiting for the Ukrainian president. The troops are bearing 58 flags – for the 56 US states and territories – plus the American and Ukrainian flags.

This welcome routine is becoming quite familiar here. French President Macron and UK Prime Minister Starmer have already been this week.

As we reported yesterday, Russian and US delegates met in Istanbul for what is believed to be the first in a series of meetings aiming to thaw relations between the two countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the talks gave him hope that problems such as the Ukraine conflict can be solved.

"The first contacts with the new US administration give some hope. There is a mutual desire to work on restoring relations," Putin said during a televised speech at a Federal Security Service meeting on Thursday.

Earlier this week, the Russian leader also said he is open to offering the US access to rare minerals, including from Russian-occupied Ukraine.

  16. We're moving in the right direction, says former Ukrainian ambassadorpublished at 15:22 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

A former Ukrainian ambassador to the UK says Donald Trump walking back on his comments on Volodymyr Zelensky shows "we're moving in the right direction".

As a reminder, when he was asked by the BBC's Chris Mason yesterday about calling Zelensky a "dictator", Trump replied: "Did I say that? I can't believe I would say that."

"We can't have free and fair elections in a war. But I hear now Trump changed his mind and he's not pushing for something that can't be done now," Vadym Prystaiko tells BBC Radio 4's World at One programme.

On the minerals deal, it is put to him that Trump has suggested that the presence of Americans in Ukraine as a result of a deal would deter Vladimir Putin from attacking.

"Personally, as a former ambassador, I'd like to see something stronger than that," Prystaiko says. "But this is the best, as I understand, we can have on the table."

  17. Clashes reported on Ukraine's northern border with Russiapublished at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

Now for some of the latest on the ground in Ukraine.

There have been clashes on Ukraine’s northern border as Russian forces make efforts to cross into the Sumy region, a spokesperson for Ukraine's general staff says.

Dmytro Lykhoviy's remarks come amid reports of a fresh Russian incursion and the possible capture of a Ukrainian village called Novenke.

Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Ukrainian government’s centre for combating disinformation, also says “local clashes” have been going on for days.

“The Russians are trying to present this as almost the start of an offensive against Sumy [a key regional centre in northern Ukraine]. This is propaganda, because they have no means or ways for this,” he says.

The Sumy region borders Russia’s Kursk region, which has been the target of a Ukrainian incursion since August last year.

Diana in Kyiv says that she's wishing Ukrainian President Zelensky well ahead of his meeting with Trump

We've been hearing some reaction from Kyiv, where people are awaiting the outcome of talks today between US President Donal Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Speaking to the BBC, Diana says: "The only thing I said to the children this morning was 'we need to pray, because today our president is going to sign a peace agreement.'

"You can't explain to children what a minerals agreement is. But children know what peace is, and they know what it will be like when the war is over. So I wish our president success and God help him."

Arsenii says that "if Trump wants our minerals, then we have to make that sacrifice so that people and children don't die because of this war. I lost a lot of family and friends in this war, so it's time to end it".

"What gives him the right to decide without the Ukrainian people?" asks Vitalii, who adds: "The Constitution says that all subsoil belongs to the people of Ukraine, not to Zelenskyy. That's all... America is a powerful country and we need protection. We need guarantees."

Ihor tells the BBC that he agrees with Zelensky that this deal could "make a lot or nothing".

"The main goal is to get support from our main partner, the United States," he adds, "so, Glory to Ukraine! we thank America for its help."

I've just arrived at the White House, which is still relatively quiet ahead of Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky's arrival.

Today's events begin at 11:00 EST (16:00 GMT), when Trump and Zelensky will greet each other just outside the West Wing.

The White House has already gained quite a bit of practice on these highly choreographed arrivals, what with the recent visits from French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this week.

Following the arrival, the two will begin a bilateral meeting and lunch, part of which will be open to a small group of reporters.

During previous visits, these meetings have turned into extended question-and-answer sessions, occasionally placing foreign leaders in tricky situations in which they must find diplomatic ways to address Trump's comments in front of the world's media.

At 13:00 EST (18:00 GMT), the two will have a joint news conference, in which the world's media will be hoping for firm details of the deal.

Later in the afternoon, at 17:00 EST (22:00 GMT), Trump will depart the White House for Palm Beach, where he'll spend the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

  20. Deal will pave way for deeper US ties - Zelensky adviserpublished at 14:03 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February

A senior adviser to Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky is upbeat about the US-Ukraine minerals deal expected to be signed later today.

“It is a framework agreement that paves the way to a strategic partnership with the USA,” Mykhaylo Podolyak tells Ukrainian TV.

“It will have several appendices with numbers outlining investment programmes, the division of income from the joint exploitation of minerals, and other appendices which will outline security guarantees,” Podolyak adds.

The agreement will outline which and how much weaponry Ukraine will receive, as well as the sources of funds for aid to Ukraine, he says.

Asked if he’s seen the final draft of the agreement, Podolyak says: “Yes, naturally.”
