The sound of helicopters could be heard throughout the night here as Israeli forces intensified their attack over the border in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah said it was locked in intense fights on the ground with IDF forces, but the group has continued to fire dozens of rockets into Israel.

In Lebanon, more than 1.2 million people have been forced from their homes by the expanding Israeli assault - with more communities ordered to evacuate, including in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as we reported earlier.

Separately, Hezbollah has still not said whether an earlier hit on the capital killed or injured Hashem Safieddine, who was widely expected to become the group’s new leader. But reports suggest the IDF is increasingly confident it did kill him.

With the Jewish New Year holiday now ended, the expectation is Israel will act soon in retaliation for Iran’s ballistic missile attack during the week.
