NYC Mayor Eric Adams: No injuries or loss of life 'at this time'
A major disaster has been avoided after a partial building collapse in New York City.
Here's what we know:
- Witnesses say they heard a loud boom and saw smoke rising from the 20-storey residential building in the Bronx
- Images show large piles of rubble and bricks, and a vertical scar from the ground to the building's roof
- Mayor Eric Adams said there are no reported injuries in what initial investigations indicate was an explosion
- The fire department believe the explosion happened in a boiler room of the chimney shaft
- Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson said a "major disaster" was avoided, and praised the "incredible efforts" of first responders.
- A commissioner from the department of buildings said the building has a number of open violations, including three for boilers, but they were for non-safety issues, and they don't know if any of the violations were related to this incident
