    California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the earthquake and the subsequent tsunami warnings, his office has announced.

    On X, formerly Twitter, the governor's office said that Newsom is now meeting with state emergency officials and "working to ensure Californians are safe".

    A state operations centre has also been activated to coordinate the state's response.

    Coastal California residents received emergency notifications urging them to seek higher ground immediately, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

    "A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters," the warning said.

    The warning extended to the coastal areas of California and Oregon and after an earthquake was felt across the region.

    "We are activating our Emergency Operations Center in response to the Tsunami Warning," San Francisco Mayor London Breed posted on X. "Please move off the coast and at least one block inland. Public safety personnel are deploying to the coast to warn people to move inland."

    Approximately 4.7m people are under a tsunami warning after a 7.0-magnitude quake was recorded at a depth of six miles (10 km) near the California town of Ferndale.

    In a warning issued by the National Weather Service's Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii, tsunamis are possible for coasts located within 300km of the earthquake's epicentre.

    Tsunami warning sirens have been activated along a long stretch of California coastline, including Bonny Doon in Santa Cruz County.
