    Breaking

    Polls across the UK have now closed and the exit poll is in. It predicts that Labour are set to win 410 seats in the general election.

    The Conservatives are predicted to win 131 with the Lib Dems on 61.

    Reform is predicted to win 13, the SNP is predicted to win 10, Plaid Cymru four and the Greens two.

    The exit poll is carried out by polling company Ipsos, jointly for BBC News, ITV News and Sky News. The exit poll does not apply to Northern Ireland.

    Exit polls have never been carried out in Northern Ireland, unlike the rest of the UK where they are a regular fixture of election night.

    Unlike elections for the Northern Ireland Assembly or councils, this election is very straightforward.

    Voters put an X in a box beside one candidate who they wanted to become their MP.

    The candidate with the most votes in a constituency will be the winner of that seat in the House of Commons.

    It is known as the first past the post voting system.

  5. What time will we know the results?published at 21:08 British Summer Time 4 July

    The first results are expected quite quickly in Great Britain, with a small number of constituencies due to declare who has been elected from about 23:00.

    The first Northern Ireland results are forecast to come in from about 02:00 although this is just an estimate.

    A full picture will be emerging quite clearly across the UK from about 03:00 and most results will be in by 05:30.

    However, it depends on how tight the voting is, if there are recounts in close constituencies then things could take longer.

    Still haven’t voted? You have until 22:00 to do so at your local polling station.

    You can find details of your polling station and all the candidates standing in your constituency here.

    You need photo ID to vote – a full list of the acceptably typesis available on the Electoral Office website, external.
