    There are reports coming in that the suspect was in the tree line, armed with an AK-47 rifle, according to the BBC's US partner CBS News.

    Multiple law enforcement officials have told the broadcaster that the armed suspect was spotted on the edge of the golf course by a member of Donald Trump's US Secret Service's advance team, two holes ahead from where the president was golfing.

    The suspect reportedly fled the scene after he was engaged by Secret Service agent with multiple gunshots, and the suspect jumped into a car.

    CBS reports that a car with the same license plate number was stopped in Martin County and one individual was taken into custody. It is unclear if it is the gunman, but it is believed to be and law enforcement officials are questioning that individual now.

    Law enforcement officials say an AK-47 style weapon and scope has been recovered at the scene by the golf course.

    Today's shooting in Florida is the second to take place around Donald Trump this year.

    On 13 July, Trump was shot in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which also killed a crowd member and critically wounded two others.

    The gunman was later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old kitchen worker from the town of Bethel Park.

    More than two months later, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

    Anger over the Secret Service's handling of the shooting ultimately led to the resignation of US Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle.

    She has, for now, been replaced by acting director of the Secret Service Ronald Rowe Jr.

    Barry Donadio, a former Secret Service agent, tells the BBC that after the assassination attempt on Trump a few months ago, his security detail would likely have more resources and every roof covered wherever he is.

    Donadio says he's heard reports that the reported incident on Trump's golf course may have involved an AK47.

    "That is a large calibre weapon and you could hit targets well out to 800 metres with that," he says.

    "Everybody has a right to have their candidate safe, whoever their preference is, and that's the job of the Secret Service," Donadio adds.

    Citing sources familiar with the investigation, the BBC's US partner, CBS, has confirmed that a suspect is in custody after being shot at by US Secret Service officers.

    According to the sources, the incident began when a male with a high-powered rifle was seen near the golf course.

    At the time, the person was pointing his rifle at the golf course. Secret Service officers fired multiple shots at the suspect, who attempted to flee.

    He was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered. Trump is safe.

    No motive has so far been uncovered.

    Barbera says that the shooting took place "on the grounds" of the golf course.

    “President Trump is safe," his campaign communications director, Steven Cheung, said, adding there were "no further details at this time".
