Yesterday afternoon, BBC Radio 1’s Arielle Free was desperately trying to get back to England from her Christmas getaway in Spain.

With flights cancelled and delayed, she was starting to panic that she wouldn’t make it to Edinburgh, where she was booked to DJ the annual Hogmanay Street Party.

    Then fate intervened.

“Whilst I was sat in the airport for five hours, I got a message to say that the street party in Edinburgh has been cancelled,” she says.

Undeterred, she made it back home – and is determined to keep the party going.

The house DJ has put out a call on social media, saying that, if fans get in touch, she’ll pitch up to their house parties and play there instead.

  8. Flood warning issued in the Lake Districtpublished at 16:17 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

A flood warning has been issued for the River Rothay at Grasmere, White Bridge and Stock Lane in the Lake District, according to the Environment Agency.

The river there is currently at a height of 1.5m (4.9ft). Properties are at risk of flooding when it hits 1.58m (5.1ft).

It's the only warning in England, and means that flooding is expected imminently and locals should act now.

Residents are advised to move to a safe place, including higher ground or the upper floor of a building, turn off the utilities in their homes, and put flood protection in place if possible.

The website will be updated regularly, external with the latest warnings and advice.

Many sites on the mainland north from Aberdeen to Fort William have seen 50% more precipitation than normal this month.

The wettest area, compared to normal levels, is Lossiemouth, with almost three times the normal amount of precipitation expected in December.

It's almost been the sixth wettest month there since 1961 - and the wettest December since 2020.

Unsurprisingly, nearby Kinloss has also had its wettest December since at least 1957.

A quiet Highland village is the scene of a dramatic landslide this New Year's Eve, as heavy rain washes away a steep riverbank.

Local photographer Rob Sutherland headed up the road up to Divach in Drumnadrochit, describing it as “really unstable.”

A house sits about 15m (79ft) from the bank, he says, but tells me it “looks secure for the moment as the main part of the slip is slightly downstream".

As for the weather, it “seems to be drying out a bit but it is changing fast,” he adds.

Further down in the village, which lies on the shores of Loch Ness, the River Enrick has burst its banks and flooded footpaths in popular Urquhart Bay woods.

The man behind London's traditional New Year's Day parade is confident the event will go ahead - although he warns rain and strong winds are likely.

A littler earlier, parade organiser Bob Bone told our colleagues at BBC London "there might be a few gusts that are particularly strong" before adding that "there will be a bit of rain - let's be honest".

"But you know what? The spectacle and the fantastic entertainment that's going to be out there on the streets is going to make anybody who's watching forget all about what's happening above them," Bone says.

    "It's going to be great."

A street on a hill in Edinburgh with a big fountain in the foreground. There are no people around and the buildings are old and pretty, with sunlight on the tops of some

Edinburgh's Hogmanay cancelled all of its outdoor events last night, leaving tourists who had travelled for the festivities as downcast as the weather.

Aditi Sahu, 35, and Neeraj Krishnan, 35, travelled from London and had planned their trip around the fireworks. Krishnan tells PA Media he now feels "stranded".

Sahu adds: "They should have had a plan B in place. At the last minute, you are not going to find anything good."

Others, however, are less disappointed. "We are going to make the best of it, but it is sad," says Katharina Ende, who is originally from Germany.

She has travelled up to Edinburgh from York: "I think for safety reasons it was the right decision. I think there is still going to be a party. The city is beautiful and we have things to see too."

International student Darren Travasso, 21, from Mumbai, India, travelled to Edinburgh from Leicester to celebrate with friends. He's in the ctiy for three days, costing him between £200 - £300.

"It is a bit sad but there's still time to come up with other ideas," he says.

    • Fireworks displays in Newcastle and Gateshead, Lowestoft, Suffolk, and Claremont Pier have all been called off tonight due to severe weather - they've been rescheduled to a few days later
    • New Year's Day plunges have also begun to be called off in Wales - including in Newport in Pembrokeshire and St Davids Penknife Club
    • And a New Year's Eve firework display to mark 1500 years since the founding of the city of Bangor in North Wales has been cancelled because of today's weather
    • The New Year's Day Sandown Carnival on the Isle of Wight has been postponed, and will take place later in 2025, organisers say

Forget the pyrotechnics, some of you may get to welcome the new year in under nature's own fireworks display.

Following a recent coronal mass ejection from the Sun, there is the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights overnight.

As is usually the case, it's the far north of the UK that is best favoured for seeing any possible display, and in parts of central and northern Scotland cloud breaks are likely at time to allow a good view of the sky.

You will need to wrap up well and be patient, should the aurora make an appearance, as it will be turning much colder from the north tonight. Rain, sleet or snow showers will also punctuating the clearer periods at times too.

For most other parts of the country, cloudy skies will spoil any chances.

A few breaks in the cloud in the far south of England are possible, but the chance of the northern lights being seen here is always more limited and dependant on the strength of display.
