  2. IDF says it has targeted 120 Hezbollah sitespublished at 19:04 British Summer Time 29 September

Israel's military says a short while ago it launched an "extensive attack" across Lebanon, involving "dozens" of war planes.

It said it had attacked "about 120 military targets of the terrorist organisation Hezbollah" - including in southern Lebanon and deeper into the country.

The IDF went on to say that these sites included "significant" headquarters, military buildings and structures used by the group to attack Israel.

  3. Four dead and 33 injured in Hudaydah, say Houthispublished at 18:44 British Summer Time 29 September

Houthi-run media is now reporting that four people have been killed and 33 injured in the Israeli air strike on the port of Hudaydah.

It says those killed were one port worker and three engineers at the Al-Hali power plant in the north of the town.

It also reports that rescue teams are still searching for people under the rubble.

Video footage - which the BBC has not yet verified - also appears to show a large fire still burning at a power plant in Hudaydah.

  4. Israel takes on nearly all its enemies at oncepublished at 18:32 British Summer Time 29 September

Today’s Israeli airstrikes on the Iran-backed Houthis’ energy facilities in Yemen are a further example of the country’s apparent determination to take the fight to the enemy.

And the enemy, for Israel, is what Iran terms "the Axis of Resistance", meaning a resistance to the ongoing Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Golan Heights and Gaza. Many also oppose the existence of the state of Israel. Axis of Resistance is a relatively recent phrase coined by Iran and seen as a play on President George W Bush's term for Iran, Iraq and North Korea as "the axis of evil".

Just as Israel has come under attack from drones and missiles fired by Iran’s allied militias in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen, so has Israel struck out at targets in all those countries.

Edmund Fitton-Brown, a former British ambassador to Yemen and now a senior adviser with the Counter Extremism Project, tells the BBC: "The Houthis have continued to try to attack Israel and have known intent to try to upgrade their capabilities to make their attacks more effective".

He says there is little cost to Israel here "because they are not attacking a legitimate sovereign entity".

This year Israel has struck targets in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Gaza, the West Bank and is widely believed to be behind the assassination of the Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July.

With the firm backing of the US and its warships poised offshore, Israel has set course to take on almost all its enemies at once.

  5. Where in Yemen has Israel hit?published at 18:17 British Summer Time 29 September

As we've been reporting, Israel has struck two locations in Yemen - Ras Isa and Hudaydah - which it says were Houthi military sites.

Israel's defence minister, Yoav Gallant, says they show "no place is too far".

You can see where they are on the map, below, in relation to Israel and Lebanon, where the rest of the fighting has been. The Houthis have also fired weapons from Yemen towards Israel in recent days - including a drone early this morning.

"We only had a short notice. We received a message that came from Israeli army to our phones asking us to leave our house," 65-year-old Kamal Mouhsen, from the Dahieh suburb of Beirut, tells me.

They received that message yesterday around noon and he says “30-40 minutes” after they left there were a series of air strikes on their neighbourhood.

“We couldn’t grab anything. I just took my car key and left with my family.”

He is sitting with his daughter, grandson and two of his neighbours in the courtyard of the school that they;ve taken refuge in. "There is no available space here. It is full of people who fled the south."

They had to sleep outside last night but today they found out their relatives are also here so they could squeeze in a room with them. "We are 16 people in a room." Nada, Kamal’s daughter says.

While we are talking, we are hearing a heavy buzz of Israeli drones. We can actually see it overhead as it is flying low, doing circles over and over.

And then a few minutes later we hear booms in the background - Israel carried out fresh air strikes on Dahieh, which is not very far from the school.

Nada says they are trying to get themselves and their children mentally ready for the fact there won’t any home to return to. "We can’t afford paying 500 to 1,000 dollars for rent. And prices are going up. I think we are going to be stuck in this school for a very long period."

  7. Houthis call Israeli strikes on Yemen 'American-British aggression'published at 18:04 British Summer Time 29 September

We've previously detailed Israeli air strikes on two parts of Yemen - Ras Isa and Hudaydah - which Israel says were targeting Houthi sites.

Houthi spokesman Mohammed Al Bukhaiti has described the attacks as "American-British aggression", saying Israel is an "extension" of it used "as a cover to evade moral responsibility".

He adds: "We will deal with [the strikes] on this basis."

We've contacted the UK Foreign Office for a response.

  8. Lebanon says 21 killed in Israeli strike in eastpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 29 September

Throughout the day, we've been bringing you reports of Israeli strikes on various locations across Lebanon. Israel says it is targeting Hezbollah positions.

Lebanon’s health ministry has said that 21 people have been killed and a further 47 injured in a strike in the Baalbek-Hermel region in the eastern Bekaa Valley, based on an initial death toll.

Earlier, Lebanese media reported that at least 17 people from the same family were killed in air strikes in Zboud, which also sits in the region.

  9. Hezbollah and Israel report more rockets fired into northern Israelpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 29 September

We're getting reports of more strikes being launched from Lebanon into northern Israel.

In the last hour, the Israeli military says 35 rockets have been launched from Lebanon - 10 towards Western Galilee and then a further 25 into the Haifa Bay area.

The IDF also says it has intercepted two drones that crossed from Lebanon into Israel's waters. It says it used a missile ship and IDF combat helicopter to intercept them, and no injuries were reported.

In an update on Telegram, Hezbollah says it launched an "aerial attack" using a "fleet of drones" targeting a camp of Israeli soldiers and officers. It claimed it "successfully hit" targets with precision.

And Hezbollah says it targeted the Ramya area with "artillery shells".

  10. 'No place is too far,' says Israeli defence ministerpublished at 17:14 British Summer Time 29 September

We've just had a statement from Israel's defence minister, Yoav Gallant, who says: "I visited the IAF [Israeli Air Force] command and control room, where I followed the strike conducted against the Houthi terrorist organisation.

"Our message is clear - for us, no place is too far."

  11. Watch: Huge explosion at Yemen portpublished at 17:06 British Summer Time 29 September

Several videos and photos have been posted on social media appearing to show the Israeli strike on the Yemeni port of Hudaydah.

We have been able to verify the location and the timing of this video below, which shows a large explosion at the port.

Israel says it is using dozens of aircraft to strike infrastructure in Yemen - it says it is targeting locations that enable Iranian weapons to be imported into the region, and that it is responding to attacks from the Houthis on Israel.

Missiles fired from Yemen towards Israel were intercepted on Friday and on Saturday.

  12. What is the 'Axis of Resistance' and why is it important here?published at 16:47 British Summer Time 29 September

As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies, it carries with it the potential to draw in other Iran-backed forces in the Middle East.

As we reported in the past hour, Israel says it has struck Houthi targets in Yemen.

On Saturday, an alliance of Iraqi Shia militias known as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) claimed that it carried out drone attacks on Israel and the occupied Golan Heights.

Both are part of a wide network of Iran-backed armed groups operating in countries across the Middle East - which includes Hamas in Gaza.

They are opposed to Israel and the US, and sometimes refer to themselves as the “Axis of Resistance”, though the extent of Iran’s influence over them is not clear.

The US says co-ordination is overseen by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its overseas arm, the Quds Force. Both are designated by the US as terrorist organisations, as are a number of the regional armed groups.

The groups have dramatically stepped up their attacks against Israel, US forces and other linked targets since the start of the war in Gaza in October, in what they say is a demonstration of their solidarity with the Palestinians.

Israeli and US-led forces have responded to some of those attacks with air strikes.

In the last half hour, Lebanon’s health ministry has said that 24 people have been killed - and 29 injured - in a strike on Ain al-Delb, near the city of Sidon.

Sidon is located about halfway between the Israel-Lebanon border and the Lebanese capital or Beirut.

Earlier, Lebanese media said that 17 people from the same family had been killed in Zboud, in north-east Lebanon.

  14. Israel says attacking infrastructure used to transport Iranian weaponspublished at 16:19 British Summer Time 29 September

More now on the strikes in Yemen.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it attacked infrastructure and ports in Yemen that it claimed were being used to transport Iranian weapons to the region.

The strike was in response to the "recent attacks" by the Houthis against Israel, the IDF said. The Houthis claimed credit for an intercepted missile fired at central Israel on Friday.

We don't know the scale of the damage from the strikes in Yemen yet. We'll bring you more as we get it.

  15. Israel says it attacked Yemeni power plants and sea portpublished at 16:00 British Summer Time 29 September

  17. Reports of air strike on Yemenpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 29 September
    Breaking

We're seeing reports of an air strike on the port of Hudaydah in Yemen. Reuters news agency reports that fuel tanks were hit.

Israel has struck Hudaydah before, but has not commented on the latest reports.

The Houthi news agency released a statement responding to "Israeli aggression in Hudaydah", saying: "The Yemeni support front will not stop, our strikes against the Zionist enemy will not stop."

We'll bring you more details when we have them.

  18. We can deploy forces at short notice, says US in new statementpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 29 September

A statement released by the Pentagon says the US "retains the capability to deploy forces on short notice" and is determined to prevent Iran and Iranian-backed partners and proxies from "exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict".

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the Department of Defense "remain focused on the protection of US citizens and forces in the region, the [defence] of Israel, and the de-escalation of the situation through deterrence and diplomacy," the statement reads.

Meanwhile, White House national security spokesman says an all-our war between Israel and Hezbollah and Iran is not the way to return displaced Israeli citizens to the north of the country.

Speaking to CNN, John Kirby adds: "We've seen the rhetoric coming out of Tehran and we'll watch and see what they do."

Kirby added that US support for Israel's security was iron-clad.

Several days ago, the Israeli government said returning tens of thousands of displaced people to their homes in northern Israel was one of the country's war aims.

  19. Hospital in Bekaa Valley treats 'hundreds' of injured people in past weekpublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 29 September

    Orla Guerin
Senior international correspondent, reporting from the Bekaa Valley

Minutes after the air strike I reported in the last post, the emergency room was teeming with people, as casualties from the latest strike were brought in.

There was a lot of tension and shouting, and anger among relatives of the wounded.

Dr Abdallah tells us the hospital has received about 400 casualties from Israeli attacks in the past week or so – all of them civilians. About 100 of them have died.

He says there were women, children and the elderly among the casualties, and several families have lost more than one person.

Almost all the doctors and nurses are staying at the hospital around the clock, he says, because it’s too dangerous to drive home.

Israel says it’s targeting Hezbollah sites, and it’s war is not with the people of Lebanon. But more than 1,000 people have been killed by Israeli strikes since Monday, and many of the dead and wounded are civilians.

Among the other civilian casualties we saw at the hospital were an 85-year old woman – in intensive care – after an Israeli attack close to her home.

In the paediatric ICU, in the bed across from Noor, there was an 18-month-old baby called Abdel Razzak, who also had severe head injuries. Nurses told us that a bomb landed on his house. His condition is also critical.

  20. 'I am not Hezbollah' says father of daughter injured in Israeli strikespublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 29 September

    Orla Guerin
Senior international correspondent, reporting from the Bekaa Valley

There’s been another air strike in the Bekaa Valley, east of Beirut. We heard it as we were filming in a paediatric intensive care unit where young children wounded in Israeli attacks are being treated.

We heard the sound of the plane flying overhead, then the power went out, followed by an explosion, which rattled the windows.

Lying in bed, unaware of the latest attack, was a 6-year-old girl called Noor. She was unconscious with her head heavily bandaged. Her mother, Rima, was sitting by her bedside, holding of a copy of the Quran, and praying.

She told us Noor was wounded on her own doorstep on Monday by an Israeli strike nearby. She showed us a video of Noor praying just before the attack, because she was frightened.

“She is very bright and sociable,” she says. “Everybody loves her. Now her fate is in God’s hands.”

The medical director of the hospital, Dr Bassel Abdallah, tells us Noor’s condition is critical. Her skull is fractured and she has had a brain haemorrhage.

Her twin brother, Mohammed, was lightly wounded in the attack and has already been discharged.

Noor’s father, Abdallah Al Moussawi, tells me his children were born after 10 years of IVF treatment. Standing by her bedside he railed against the international community, and against Israel.

“I am not Hezbollah,” he shouts. “And my daughter is just a child who was out playing.”
