New Darlington MP Lola McEvoy has pledged a "happier, brighter future" after winning the seat for Labour.

She defeated sitting Conservative Peter Gibson by just over 2,000 votes.

Ms McEvoy, who was born and brought up in the town, polled 16,621 votes to the Tories' 14,323.

"We've taken a step to a proud, green industrial future," she said.

Labour had been fighting to win back a seat they lost to the Tories in 2019.

Mr Gibson said it had been the "privilege of my life to represent the town".

He said he believed the Tories would leave behind lasting change, citing the Darlington economic campus which he said has brought more than 2,000 civil service jobs to the town.

Reform UK candidate Michael Walker came third with 6,852 votes on a turnout of 60%.

  16. Kate Osborne celebrates but concerned over Reform votespublished at 02:41 British Summer Time 5 July

    Martin Lindsay
    BBC Radio Newcastle

Labour’s Kate Osborne has been elected MP for Jarrow and Gateshead East.

She’s been the MP for Jarrow since 2019, but that seat changed under the new boundaries. So, this was a Labour hold with more than 18,000 votes.

There were huge cheers from her camp when the result was announced, but she admitted she’s concerned by the number of votes Reform UK got here, as it came second.

She said her main priority locally is to tackle child poverty - the North East has the highest rates in the country.

But first, she and her team are off to celebrate with a few drinks.

While all eyes have been the election results, a hat in Blyth has garnered attention of its own online.

Worn by the High Sheriff of Northumberland, who is declaring the results of four counts, it has attracted many comments, with some calling it "the hat of the night”.

But what's the story behind it?

Lucia Bridgeman, High Sheriff of Northumberland, said: "The outfit that the high sheriff wears, it's not meant to be ostentatious, but is meant to be a uniform, in a sense."

She said her outfit was "very simple, a dress, a coat, and a hat - and the hat has ostrich feathers on it.”

But Ms Bridgeman said she was shocked to hear it had gone viral.

"I don't have Twitter, so I won’t even see it [the comments], how funny," she said.

This is not the last we will see of the hat, either.

She said: "I was given the hat, this is not my hat, it's been handed on by a previous High Sheriff in another county.

“So it’s come to Northumberland and it will be passed on, you will see it again,” Ms Bridgeman promised.
