I bumped into Democratic Senator Michael Bennet on the streets of Chicago earlier.

I asked him what he thought of the current state of the presidential race, and he said he thinks it’s a 50-50 toss-up between Harris and Trump, but that he feels that the Democrats have momentum coming out of this convention.

He went on to add that he predicts the Democrats will take back control of the House of Representatives but that it’s too soon to tell who will take control of the Senate.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has joined a chorus of critics calling for the Democratic National Convention to allow a Palestinian American to speak on the convention stage.

It comes after a group of pro-Palestinian Democrats said their request for a speaking slot at this week's convention was turned down by party leaders.

Ocasio-Cortez, the progressive Democratic lawmaker, says the DNC "must change course".

"Just as we must honor the humanity of hostages, so too must we center the humanity of the 40,000 Palestinians killed under Israeli bombardment," she posted on X., external

"To deny that story is to participate in the dehumanization of Palestinians. The DNC must change course and affirm our shared humanity."

Donald Trump isn't in Chicago but his presence hangs over everything and he is clearly following events here.

A couple of aides told me, a little implausibly, that the former president is not tuning into the Democratic National Convention because he has no interest in watching a Democratic Party "infomercial".

But one senior campaign official confirms, anonymously, that Trump is watching and is irritated by the attacks against him.

Late last night, Trump took to social media to criticise the Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who had given a rousing speech earlier in the evening. Trump clearly didn’t like what he heard.

"The highly overrated Jewish Governor of the Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, made a really bad and poorly delivered speech," Trump wrote.

  4. Muslim Women for Harris disband after pro-Palestinian denied slot at DNCpublished at 20:32 British Summer Time 22 August

The group Muslim Women for Harris says that it's disbanding in response to the Harris-Walz campaign’s "refusal" to allow a pro-Palestinian person to speak on the convention's main stage.

The group’s statement, external said: "We cannot in good conscience continue Muslim Women for Harris-Walz, in light of this new information from the Uncommitted movement, that VP Harris’ team declined their request to have a Palestinian American speaker take the stage at the DNC."

A group of "uncommitted" delegates were hoping as late as last night that a Palestinian-American politician would be allowed to speak critically about Israel's war in Gaza.

A spokesman for the Uncommitted National Movement said their request was turned down.

The BBC contacted Kamala Harris's campaign for comment.

Democrats will gather in Chicago tonight where Vice-President Kamala Harris will make the biggest speech of her life, as she readies herself for the sprint before November's presidential election.

On the final day of the Democratic National Convention, Harris will formally accept her party's nomination - following a ceremonial roll call earlier in the week during which state delegates confirmed their support.

Her running mate Tim Walz spoke last night, making a personal pitch to middle America by giving a "pep talk" in the vein of an American football coach.

Harris became the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden stepped aside and gave her his backing, following weeks of pressure from party members.

  6. Who are the 'uncommitted' delegates and what do they want?published at 20:00 British Summer Time 22 August

There are about three dozen so-called "uncommitted" delegates at the DNC this week. Their status is due to the 750,000 votes that were cast "uncommitted" during the Democratic primaries in protest of the Biden administration's policies towards Israel and Gaza.

These delegates have been working since they arrived on Sunday to move the party's policy platform. They've demanded that the US have an arms embargo against Israel and called for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

With thousands of delegates already backing Harris, the odds were always stacked against this small group, but they believed they could at least get a Palestinian speaker to speak about Gaza at the DNC - those hopes have now been dashed, too.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators outside the convention centre today

A number of "uncommitted" delegates have been protesting outside the convention centre since last night over the Harris campaign's decision that they would not host a Palestinian speaker on the DNC stage.

I just spoke with Samuel Doten, a Minnesota delegate, who's on his way to the pro-Palestinian sit-in demonstration outside the doors of the DNC.

"The uncommitted movement provided a list of a number of Palestinian Americans who are ready, willing and able to speak," Doten tells me. "[We] certainly offered that their speeches could be vetted by the campaign, so that it was within their message parameters."

The Harris campaign and the DNC did not accept their offer, and Doten says they finally learned about this last night. He calls it "frustrating" that they were not given an explanation.

"It's unfortunate that this has blown up into a public display because we were handling it quietly, directly, working on the inside," Doten says.

It's the final day of the Democratic National Convention and Vice-President Kamala Harris is gearing up to give the biggest speech of her political career to date.

Harris will close out the convention in Chicago by formally accepting her party's presidential nomination in an address that will look ahead to November's election.

Meanwhile, more demonstrations are planned outside the convention centre today over US support of Israel’s war in Gaza. A group of pro-Palestinian delegates who were denied the chance to speak at the convention have been staging a sit-in outside the arena.

The four-day convention has been leading up to tonight, and speakers have included President Joe Biden, Harris's running mate Tim Walz, TV host Oprah Winfrey, former President Bill Clinton and Barack and Michelle Obama.
