  9. How common are US gun deaths?published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2024

According to the Gun Violence Archive, so far in 2024 there have been around 16,000 firearms deaths - excluding suicides - across the US.

Researchers say that there have nearly 500 mass shootings so far this year.

The numbers are actually trending downwards from pandemic-era highs of more than 20,000 deaths and more than 600 mass shootings in both 2021 and 2022.

But the toll will still be enough to put the US near the top of the list of countries where gun violence kills the most people.

Countries such as Venezuela and El Salvador have higher per capita gun death rates than the US. But rates are much lower in Canada and other developed countries in Europe, according to Pew Research.

Today’s shooting happened on the east side of Madison - a mid-sized city of about 270,000 people in south-central Wisconsin.

Madison is a fairly quiet and prosperous place, 200km (124 miles) north-west of Chicago, built around five lakes and surrounded by the vast, flat rural stretches of the US Midwest.

It’s the state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin, along with a host of technology, health care and other businesses - and skews younger and more progressive than the surrounding region.

In 2023, according to police statistics, there were a total of 10 murders in the city, four of which were related to domestic or partner violence.

Guy Nelson, who lives about a block away from the school, says he saw dozens of police vehicles speeding towards the building where the attack took place.

"I saw about 20 cop cars going at a high rate of speed past my house and I knew something was up," he told CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

"I was kinda nervous and scared at the same time," he continued. "I couldn't imagine what was going on there. Probably some really bad stuff."

He said he saw about 70 to 80 police vehicles arrive.

Nelson also said he very worried for everyone involved, and that the seriousness of an attack like this is more apparent when it happens so close by.

"You always see it on TV that it happens somewhere else. You know you feel bad, but you don't realise the situation as when it's here."
