    Noor Nanji

I’m always impressed at how celebrities don’t seem to feel the cold.

I’ve spotted some incredible outfits so far. They include this red sequined number worn by Ashionye Ogene, a producer on Milk, which is nominated in the short film category.

I’ve also seen a fish tail skirt and a long green dress with a train that swept along the red carpet.

Ashionye Ogene wears a red sequinned dress next to someone wearing a black blazer.
  4. A historic day for the transgender communitypublished at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February

This year, Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón becomes the first trans actress to be nominated at the Bafta Film Awards.

In the film, she plays both male and female parts as the story follows a cartel leader who leaves a life of crime to live as a transgender woman.

But some controversy has surrounded the star, after a senior Netflix executive said the discovery of historic offensive tweets by Gascón "really is a bummer" for those connected to the film.

The Spanish actress has "sincerely apologised to everyone who has been hurt" and stepped back from the film's awards campaign.

For context: Annie Wallace was nominated at Scottish Baftas in 2016 for her role in Hollyoaks. Some previous nominees have transitioned in the years since they were recognised.

  6. Do the Baftas matter?published at 15:27 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February

Awards matter to filmmakers, as they matter in any industry. They are the gold standard of excellence, recognition of the long hours and creative energy that goes into making a movie.

The Baftas are certainly an important stop on the route to the Oscars. Everything studios, distributors and actors (if they’re lucky enough to be nominated for an Oscar) do in awards season is part of the build up to the Academy Awards.

But ever since Bafta moved its event ahead of the Oscars more than 20 years ago, it has done a good job positioning itself as a significant contributor to that race.

Bafta itself says it’s Britain’s biggest night in film. But there’s no way that studios and distributors would go to the vast expense of bringing talent into London unless they thought it was worth it.

  7. Warwick Davis to be honoured with Bafta fellowshippublished at 15:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February

Actor, comedian and presenter Warwick Davis has been chosen to receive this year’s Bafta fellowship - which recognises people who have made an “outstanding contribution” to film.

Davis has been celebrated for various roles in his career, notably in the Harry Potter film series and the Star Wars franchise.

Bafta says that beyond acting, Davis is an entrepreneur and advocate who has dedicated his career to creating a more inclusive screen industry, and “uses his platform to challenge societal prejudice and champion self-empowerment”.

Davis was born with a rare form of dwarfism, and often advocates for a more inclusive film industry.

This recognition is not just about the body of work I’ve contributed but also about the people who’ve stood by me and the audiences who have made this journey worthwhile,” Davis said after the news was announced ahead of the ceremony.

BBC journalists smile with on the red carpet with a purple sign of the Bafta awards in the background

It’s a freezing cold day (I have thermals under my black tie dress…shhh).

But weather aside, there’s a great vibe here at the Royal Festival Hall.

The red carpet is being rolled out, tripods are being set up, the photographers are jostling for the best position, and the final preparations for the Baftas are being made.

Once the media lock-in begins, no-one can go in or out… so some journalists are also making a frantic last minute trip to the loos.

There’s a lot of last minute scrambling, but everyone is excited for the celebs to swan in soon.

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant will be back on stage this year to host the Bafta Film Awards for a second time.

The Scottish actor is well known for his role in Doctor Who and he was a key figure in the raunchy Disney show Rivals in 2024.

Bafta's chief executive Jane Millichip says they “couldn’t be happier“ that Tennant is returning.

“He is an absolute pleasure to work with, and his performance this year was simply outstanding - warm, witty, whip-smart, and with a delightful touch of mischief,” she says.

British band Take That will take that energy to the stage, singing Greatest Day, which was featured in nominated film Anora.

Actor Jeff Goldblum will also be performing on piano during the In Memoriam section of the awards.
