There were moments both serious and silly in tonight's Oscars ceremony, from paying tribute to responders to the LA wildfires, to winners of best original song accepting the award, well... singing. Here are the moments you might have missed:

Last into the winners room, it’s Sean Baker – Anora’s director, who’s had one heck of an evening.

Speaking to journalists, he says sex work is “our oldest profession” but has “an incredibly unfair stigma” attached to it.

He says he thinks it should be decriminalised, and adds that he hopes that his work will contribute in some way towards achieving that.

He also speaks about how much it meant to him, to have indie films recognised at the Oscars.

“We jump onto these projects, knowing we have to compete with films that have budgets,” he says.

He adds that to get into the same room as films like Wicked – and to be able to compete – means “we’re doing something right”.

Earlier, director Sean Baker - who's just made history with his four wins for Anora - said he wants to thank the Academy for recognising "a truly independent film - long live independent film!"

Independent films are produced by smaller production companies. They do not follow the same formula as studio films, which means instead, they can vary in style and genre.

Baker is a bit of an indie king. He's behind films such as The Florida Project and is used to working on smaller budgets, often telling the stories of sex workers.

Speaking about the win, producer Alex Coco said: "We made this movie for $6m (£4.7m). Shooting on location in New York City with about 40 crew members. They're all back in New York. This is for you guys.

"If you're trying to make independent films, please keep doing it. We need more. This is proof."

Mikey Madison has just come backstage, to speak to the awaiting press.

She calls her best actress win “a huge honour”, and one that she thinks will sink in later down the line.

She also once again pays tribute to the sex worker community who she met during filming, and to Anora director Sean Baker, calling him “a true indie filmmaker”.

“We went off to make this weird crazy movie,” she says, adding that they poured their hearts into it.

When asked what’s next for her, she seems momentarily at a loss for words.

“I just want to keep making movies”, she says. “I just know that tonight I’m going home to my new puppies and probably cleaning up their mess, and that will probably take me back down to earth.”

It's just gone 05:00 here in London, and 21:00 in Los Angeles - where Hollywood's biggest stars are beginning their celebrations (and commiserations).

Celebrating big tonight is the team behind Anora - the story of a a sex worker who has a whirlwind ill-fated romance with the spoilt son of a Russian oligarch. Its director, Sean Baker, made history as the first person to win four Oscars for a single film. Its protagonist, Mikey Madison, won best actress and the film won best picture.

Adrien Brody used his acceptance speech for best actor to call for hate not to go unchecked and a "healthier, more inclusive world".

I'm Still Here wins best international film, which our reporter Noor Nanji says got the biggest applause of the night in the winners room. Its director dedicates the award to the film's subject, Eunice Paiva, "a woman who after a loss suffered during an authoritarian regime decided not to bend, and to resist".

No Other Land, which follows the friendship between a Palestinian activist and journalist and Israeli journalist, wins best documentary film."We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together our voices are stronger," Yuval Abraham says.

  8. Adrien Brody’s brooch draws laughterpublished at 04:54 Greenwich Mean Time

Next up backstage, it’s Adrien Brody - man of the moment.

First of all, the best actor winner is asked about his shiny silver brooch.

For context, brooches can often carry political significance - as some on the red carpet showed earlier.

But Brody says: “It’s just beautiful”, drawing laughter from everyone here.

On a more serious note, he says The Brutalist’s message is an important one, reflecting how there’s “no place for intolerance”.

“Hatred and oppression have no place in this world.”

Zoe Saldaña has just come into the press room, and people here have gone crazy. As a reminder, she earlier won best supporting actress for Emilia Perez.

There’s cheering, some are standing to applaud, and everyone is waving their number cards in the air, trying to catch her attention.

Explaining what this moment means to her, Saldaña says: “If I don’t act, if I don’t do my art, then what am I, who am I."

“Realising that, you realise it’s not about the win,” she says.

She adds that means, “the day when you do win, you just have a deeper appreciation for it".

Anora’s creator Sean Baker has made Oscars history - becoming the first person to win four Oscars for a single film.

He took the top prize for writing, directing, editing and producing Anora.

And the film’s star - Mikey Madison took the top actress prize for her role as the sex worker who marries a Russian playboy.

Walt Disney won four Oscars in one night in 1954 but it was for four separate films. In 2020, the film Parasite also won four Oscars - but only three were for director Bong Joon Ho personally, as best international feature film was awarded to South Korea.

It's almost as if we had been treated to a When Harry Met Sally sequel.

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan reunited for the Super Bowl earlier this year, and then they were here at the Oscars to introduce best picture - the biggest award of the night.

Before the announcement, Crystal (who hosted the Oscars multiple times) said: “I used to work here”.

He also re-hashed an iconic line from the film: "And when you’re going to be an Oscar winner for the rest of your life you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible".

Crystal's appearance also touched on another theme of this year's ceremony - the LA fires. Crystal lost his home to the fires.

When I met some of the actresses, strippers and dancers who were in the film, they told me that Mikey Madison is "spot on" to say the sex worker community doesn't get the respect it deserves, and that they hope that Anora's success will change that.

"My hope is that if this film wins an Oscar, it marks the beginning of a shift in Hollywood, where sex workers are respected, as workers in their own fields, but also as entertainers," Luna Sofia Miranda, a stripper and dancer who plays Lulu, told me.

We will return to the best picture speech in a moment. But let's quickly take a look at what Mikey Madison said during her win, her first Oscar for her first nomination - also for Anora.

"This is very surreal," she said, adding she was nervous, and would read from a piece of paper, first offering a string of thank yous to everyone connected with the film and her family.

Like director Sean Baker in his earlier speeches, she added she wanted to "recognise and honour the sex worker community", adding: "I will contnue to support an be an ally", and that meeting them had been "the highlight of this experience".

Sean Baker’s Anora, starring Mikey Madison as a sex worker who has a whirlwind ill-fated romance with the spoilt son of a Russian oligarch, takes home the night’s biggest prize.

Baker has long been feted as a highly talented indy filmmaker who champions outsiders but now he’s firmly on the inside with this Academy Award win, which first came to wider attention when it picked up the coveted Palme d’Or at Cannes last year.

Baker, who also wrote, edited and produced the film, created the part of Ani (Anora) especially for Madison, describing her as “so unique” in an interview with the BBC.

The other nominees in the best picture categories were:

    • Anora
    • The Brutalist
    • A Complete Unknown
    • Conclave
    • Dune: Part Two
    • Emilia Pérez
    • I'm Still Here
    • Nickel Boys
    • The Substance
    • Wicked
