Summary

  1. Starmer says security guarantees would be 'historic' step forwardpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 18 August

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is now speaking at the table, telling the other leaders that he thinks they can make "real progress" to end the war in Ukraine, in particular on security guarantees.

He says a trilateral meeting is a "sensible next step".

With that potential meeting and security guarantees, it would be a "historic" step forward, he says.

  2. Security guarantees are about 'whole... European continent' - Macronpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 18 August

Next it is President Macron of France's turn to speak.

Discussions of security guarantees are "about the whole security of the European continent" he says.

He echoes Merz's comments that a ceasefire is a "necessity" and says all the leaders "support this idea".

Security guarantees would involve a strong Ukrainian army for "years and decades to come", and a commitment from all those around the table to build security, Macron goes on to say.

  3. Merz pushes for ceasefire 'from the next meeting'published at 20:16 British Summer Time 18 August

Trump hands the floor to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Merz says today's meeting will be "extremely helpful", but stresses the need for a ceasefire sooner rather than later.

"To be honest, we all would like to see a ceasefire, the latest from the next meeting on," he tells Trump.

He adds that he "can't imagine" the trilateral meeting will take place "without a ceasefire".

He urges Trump to put pressure on Russia to agree to one.

"We’ll see how that works out and if we can do that," Trump replies. But he says the six wars he claims to have settled ended without ceasefires.

Friedrich Merz’s insistence in his comments just now on getting Russia to agree to a ceasefire as the next step is a sign of persisting differences between Ukraine/EU and the US.

  5. A prisoner exchange could come with trilateral meeting - Trumppublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 18 August

When a trilateral meeting is agreed, there will be also be prisoner exchanges too, Trump says.

"I know that there is over a thousand prisoners and I know they are going to release them," Trump says of Ukrainians held in Russia. "Maybe they are going to release them very soon - like immediately".

  6. Optimistic words, but serious facespublished at 20:12 British Summer Time 18 August

I am here in the room as the American and European leaders meet around this long table at the White House.

Donald Trump and Volodymr Zelensky have both described today's meeting as positive and constructive - though all the European leaders looked very serious and rather grim as we all walked in a few moments ago.

No one wants to disagree with President Trump, who started this meeting by praising all the European leaders. But their facial expressions and body language suggests they may not be as optimistic as their words suggest.

  7. Trump doesn't commit to a ceasefire before peacepublished at 20:10 British Summer Time 18 August

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Reporting from the White House

Donald Trump is still speaking alongside the leaders of the United States' European allies at the White House - and his comments on a potential ceasefire will have immediately jumped out at many observers.

In his remarks, Trump noted that the six wars he claims to have stopped - which include conflicts between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Armenia and Azerbaijan and India-Pakistan - ended without any sort of ceasefire.

He suggested that means that a ceasefire is not an absolute necesity to end the war - even if most of those involved prefer one.

In the past, a ceasefire before further negotiations has emerged as something of a sticking point, with Ukraine insisting that one be in place.

Notably, Zelensky did not reiterate his calls for a ceasefire when Trump asked him to address the room - potentially a sign that he has softened on the issue.

  8. Zelensky says it was "constructive" meetingpublished at 20:09 British Summer Time 18 August

Zelenksy says he and Trump had a "constructive, specific" meeting, a "very good conversation".

The Ukrainian leader repeatedly thanks Trump for meeting with him.

He says Trump is trying to organize a trilateral meeting and that Ukraine would be happy if he came.

He also says that he showed Trump "a lot of details" on a map of the battlefield.

  9. Trump says he would prefer ceasefire, but 'as of this moment, it's not happening'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 18 August

While speaking with European leaders, Trump says he would prefer an immediate to ceasefire in Ukraine, before going on to question if it would be necessary.

Trump says he wants to try and arrange a three-party meeting with Zelensky and Putin, and says he has a feeling they will "work something out".

Ultimately this is a decision that can only be made by Zelensky and the people of Ukraine working in agreement with Putin, he says.

If we can have a good meeting, Trump says he will set up a meeting with Putin, and offers to attend if they want him there.

"All of us would obviously prefer an immediate ceasefire while we work on a lasting peace, and maybe something like that could happen. As of this moment it's not happening," Trump says.

He says in other wars he has claimed to stop they have not had a ceasefire firsts, and says he doesn't know if it's necessary, but says a peace agreement at the end of "all of this" is something that is "very attainable".

  10. Russia will accept security guarantees for Ukraine, says Trumppublished at 20:04 British Summer Time 18 August

Trump says Friday's Alaska summit with Putin reinforced his belief that peace is "within reach".

In a "significant step", Putin agreed Russia would accept security guarantees for Ukraine, Trump says.

This is one of the "key points" the leaders will consider at the meeting. He says they will be considering "who will do what, essentially".

Trump says he's optimistic that the group can reach an agreement that will deter future aggression against Ukraine.

"I think the European nations are going to take a lot of the burden," he says. "We're going to help them."

The meeting will also discuss the "possible exchanges of territory", he adds.

  11. Trump hopes to work out trilateral US-Ukraine-Russia meetingpublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 18 August

Trump is greeting European leaders at the table at the White House.

He says he has spoken indirectly to Putin today and will call again after today's meeting.

"We are gonna work out a trilat (meeting) after that and see if we can get it finished and put this to sleep," he says of the war.

  12. It's an honour to have Europeans at the White House, says Trumppublished at 19:56 British Summer Time 18 August

Trump thanks the European leaders present and says it is an honour to have them at the White House.

He says it's been a very successful day.

"We want to stop the killing and get this settled," he says of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

He just had the honour of being with Zelensky and their discussions "covered a lot of territory", he adds.

Questions remain over nature of Trump's security guaranteespublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 18 August

    Paul Adams
    Diplomatic correspondent

Even after those Oval Office questions, we're not much wiser on what Donald Trump has in mind when it comes to security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a settlement to end the war.

"We'll give them good protection," the president says at one point.

Asked about reports that Washington might support arrangements akin to Nato's Article 5 collective defence commitment, the president says it hasn't yet been discussed.

But he acknowledges that Kyiv's European allies "feel very strongly" about security guarantees and are waiting nearby in the White House to discuss the issue.

"We'll help them out with that," Trump says.

Much will depend on what the US is willing to offer. Britain and France have been organising a "coalition of the willing" since March, designed to offer reassurance and support to Kyiv in the event of a ceasefire. But Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said that a US "backstop" will be necessary.

The nature of this backstop has never been spelled out, but is thought to involve air support, logistics and intelligence capabilities.

  16. Air raid alarms in eastern Ukrainepublished at 19:38 British Summer Time 18 August

An update now on air raid alarms that have been sounding across parts of Ukraine while Trump and Zelensky in the White House discuss efforts to end the war.

The warnings have been limited to regions in the east of the country, and while they were initially widespread in the east, some have now ceased.

We have just witnessed a much friendlier bilateral meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the White House compared to the bust-up we saw between the two presidents in the same room in February.

The two leaders laughed in some moments as they discussed their efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Here is a recap of some of the key lines from the Oval Office:

    • At the beginning of the meeting, Zelensky hand delivered a personal letter from his wife Olena Zelenska to Trump's wife Melania Trump to thank the US first lady for her efforts to bring Ukrainian children held in Russia back home
    • Trump says the US will give Ukraine "very good protection" but he remains uncommitted on whether that guarantee will be led by Nato or could involve other American involvement
    • The US president also says he doesn't believe a ceasefire is necessary for the war to end, a reversal of his previous position from before his talks with Putin on Friday
    • Trump said he plans to speak with Putin later today after after his meeting with Zelensky and other European leaders, who were all waiting just the other room
    • Zelensky is asked what guarantees he wants from the US, the Ukrainian leader says he needs "everything", including equipment and intelligence
    • Earlier in their exchange, there was a light-hearted moment when Zelensky was complimented by a reporter on his outfit - the same journalist who was critical of Zelensky's attire in February

Optimism but few details from the US sidepublished at 19:27 British Summer Time 18 August

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Reporting from the White House

The meeting between Trump and Zelensky sounded cautiously optimistic - a far cry from the heated Oval Office battle we saw last time around.

There were a few concrete details on next steps - particularly Trump's comment that he would speak to Vladimir Putin today, and that the US president believes a future trilateral meeting is possible, even if we don't know when or where that could take place.

More notable, however, are the details we didn't hear.

For one, we still don't have any firm indication of what any future security guarantees from the US - a key part of any future peace - will actually look like. Trump seemed to suggest that the US could provide military support, perhaps even troops, for that effort, but did not provide any clarity.

We also did not hear much about each side's expectations for what the map of Ukraine will look like after the fighting is over.

Trump has said, repeatedly and clearly, that he does not believe Ukraine can recover some of the territory it has lost, such as Crimea. Zelensky, on the other hand, has said that Ukraine's constitution won't allow him to give away its land.

It's still unclear how those two positions can be reconciled.

  19. What we're expecting next todaypublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 18 August

It's been a day packed with meetings - and it's not over yet.

    • Trump is expected to meet with the European leaders waiting in the White House state dining room starting at 19:15 BST (14:15 ET), although this will be closed to the press
    • European leaders are then gathering with Trump for a photo at around 19:30 BST (14:30 ET), we'll bring you these pictures as we get them
    • After that, there'll be a multilateral meeting between Trump and his European counterparts, expect at 20:00 BST (15:00 ET) - you'll be able to watch this in the stream at the top of the page
    • And, finally, Zelensky will hold a press conference, expected at 21:00 BST (16:00 ET)

  20. A flurry of 'thank yous' from Zelenskypublished at 19:18 British Summer Time 18 August

    Tom Bateman
    Reporting from the White House

I counted Zelensky say "thank you" to Trump and the US administration six times in the first few minutes or so that he spoke.

Vice-President JD Vance was sitting opposite the Ukrainian president on the sofa.

In February, it was Vance who berated him for not saying thank you - even though he had thanked the US for its weapons support dozens of times in the past.
