  10. How to keep your pets warm in the snowpublished at 12:52 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    Alex Smith
    BBC News Online

Timely advice from the RSPCA, whether you have a cat, dog, guinea pig, or fishy friend...

    • Keep a close eye on outdoor pets like rabbits and guinea pigs. Consider moving them inside if the temperatures drop but try to give the time and space to exercise. If outside, give them lots of extra bedding and protect their home from adverse weather
    • Ensure cats have constant access to the house or to a warm, indoor area
    • When walking your dog, or riding your horse in the dark, wear reflective clothing

    • Keep your pet dog away from frozen ponds, lakes or rivers which can pose a danger, and check their paws when you get back from walking to ensure they're not covered in grit and don't get impacted with snow
    • And, if you have a fish pond, check it every day to make sure the surface is not entirely frozen - as poisonous gases can build up under the ice. Don't break the ice as this can harm the fish, but carefully place a saucepan of hot water on the surface to gently melt a hole in the ice
  11. What do the different weather warnings mean?published at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    Alex Smith
    BBC News Online

You've probably heard or seen these before - well, here's what they mean...

When dangerous weather such as snow and ice is forecast, a weather warning will be issued.

The warnings are provided by the Met Office - the UK's national weather service - and are designed to help us plan ahead and stay safe from the hazardous impacts of severe weather.

    Graphic

A yellow warning could be some weather with the potential to cause major disruption, but is very unlikely, or weather which will probably arrive, but will only affect a small number of people.

If the risk of either factor increases, the warning will be upgraded to amber, or in very rare circumstances, red.

Meanwhile, there is currently an amber cold health alert - from the UK Health Security Agency - for the East Midlands, which is in place until Saturday, external.

Gedling Borough Council warned crews would not be able to collect garden waste or glass boxes today. The authority added that normal waste collections were "severely disrupted".

  17. Why do schools close in the snow?published at 11:15 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    Alex Smith
    BBC News Online

Schools are only allowed to close in "exceptional circumstances", says the Department for Education - but it's the head teacher who ultimately makes the decision.

The head considers how safe the journey to school is, as well as the safety of the site itself. Staff often travel much further than pupils, and in all directions, so the area considered is larger than some parents might think.

Even if the snow seems safe in the morning, schools can close if conditions are forecast to get much worse.
