Trump says he won't debate again as Harris calls for another

  1. Trump says no to another debatepublished at 00:57 British Summer Time 13 September

    Brandon Livesay
    Reporting from New York

Donald Trump has been in two presidential debates this year - one against Joe Biden that effectively ended the president's campaign, and one against Kamala Harris that was held just two days ago.

Trump says there will be no more debates before the November election.

He told his supporters in a rally today that he didn't need to debate again because he "clearly" won.

Harris doesn't see it that way. Speaking at her own rally, she said voters were "owed" another debate.

Many voter polls taken after Tuesday's debate said Harris performed better than her Republican opponent.

So it appears that we won't see any more debates (other than the vice-presidential hopefuls, who face off in less than a month).

How today's events will shape the rest of the election is anybody's guess. But we'll be here to unpack and analyse the next phase as it happens.

For now, we're wrapping up today's live coverage.

You can read more about the debate news here.

  2. Undecided before the debate, now this voter will back Trumppublished at 00:32 British Summer Time 13 September

Vanessa Pierce, an independent Wisconsin voter, was undecided before Tuesday’s debate.

After the debate, she told me that she reluctantly planned to vote for Trump.

When asked what she thought of Trump’s decision not to debate Harris again: “I don’t think it matters to me,” she said.

“I was not expecting a third presidential debate,” she said. “[Trump] already debated Biden.”

  3. Voter in swing state still unsure who to backpublished at 00:23 British Summer Time 13 September

    Ana Faguy
    US reporter

Rohan Vijayan, an independent voter from Pennsylvania, still isn’t sure who he’s going to vote for in November.

Immediately after Tuesday’s debate, he told the BBC he wasn’t overly impressed with either candidates performance. He said he wanted to hear more about Harris’s policy platform.

When Vijayan heard Trump wasn’t planning to debate Harris again, he called it a “sensible decision”.

“Further debates aren’t going to clarify anything with regards to these candidates,” he tells me.

“Americans seem to be very set in their decision, and people like me seem to definitely be the exception." At this point, Vijayan said the campaigns should solely be about expressing policy.

“They can announce it on social media, at rallies, through the media itself, it doesn’t matter to me,” he said. “I will be looking for this as an undecided voter.”

  4. Analysis

Trump's reason for no more debates doesn't quite add uppublished at 00:19 British Summer Time 13 September

    Sarah Smith
    North America editor

By refusing to take part in another debate, is Donald Trump effectively admitting that he was outperformed by Kamala Harris this week and doesn’t want to risk it happening again?

Obviously that’s not what he says. Trump insists that he won the debate on Tuesday night. But all of his actions suggest the exact opposite.

When he appeared in the media centre “spin room” straight after the debate, he said it was his best performance ever. But if he believed that, he would not have felt the need to turn up and do his own spin.

Now, when he says "there will be no third debate" will anyone really believe that he doesn’t want a rematch because he doesn’t want to tarnish what he sees as his great victory against Kamala Harris?

  5. Republican ex-lawmaker says Trump 'chickened out'published at 00:13 British Summer Time 13 September

    Kayla Epstein
    US reporter

Trump's decision not to debate Harris again did not come as a surprise to one former lawmaker.

“The vice-president mopped the floor with him," said former congresswoman Barbara Comstock, a Republican who has endorsed Kamala Harris. Comstock has been a longtime critic of Trump.

“I'm not surprised that he chickened out," she said. “I think it's expected after how poorly he did.”

Comstock said she believed the debate also showed a loosening discipline on the Trump campaign, after Trump made baseless claims that Haitian immigrants have been eating Ohio residents' pets.

    "They are unravelling," she said.

Harris says election and abortion rights are 'fight for freedom'

Kamala Harris has just finished her second rally for the day. She spoke in front of a large and boisterous crowd in North Carolina.

At the very beginning of her speech, Harris laughed as she asked the massive crowd if they had watched the debate.

She also referenced Trump's refusal to do a second debate with her.

"We owe it to the voters to have another debate," she said, echoing statements she made earlier today at her rally in Charlotte.

Earlier, we saw Trump address his own large crowd in Arizona. He told them another debate was not needed.

That's it for political rallies today, but stick with us as we bring you some more analysis and updates.

  7. Harris sticks to familiar talking pointspublished at 23:55 British Summer Time 12 September

In her speech, her second of the day, Harris is hitting all her main campaign talking points.

She criticises Trump's proposed tariffs on goods made overseas as a "Trump tax", calls on voters to read the conservative plan to overhaul the government known as Project 2025, and shares memories from her time as a "young" federal prosecutor in San Francisco. A note, earlier in Trump's speech he said he had no involvement in Project 2025.

"We are not going back," Harris says repeatedly, as supporters chant the phrase back to her.

"We, together, will move forward, Because ours is a fight for the future. And ours is a fight for freedom," she says.

She also talks about abortion, and "the right for a woman to make fundamental decisions about her own body" and slams Trump's role in undoing the federal right to abortion.

The crowd booed as she mentioned what she called a "Trump abortion ban", enacted in North Carolina after Roe v Wade was cancelled by the Supreme Court, with the help of three justices appointed by Trump.

We've just spoken to some people in Doylestown, Pennsylvania - a suburb of Philadelphia. We asked for their reaction to Tuesday's presidential debate, and Trump's decision not to participate in a second one against Harris.

Kent Adams said the ABC News moderators weren't fair to Trump.

“I don’t think he did well, but at the same time it’s hard to do well when it’s three against one," he says, adding that he thinks the only fair debate would be one that takes place on Fox News.

Adams also says that Trump has "guts" for going up against a former prosecutor like Harris in a debate.

Bob Holman says that Trump only sought to appeal to his own base of support, asking "why would he debate her again?"

"He did nothing to try and draw in the undecided voters to his position," he says.

"But it’s also impossible to know what he’ll do. Reason really doesn’t seem to come into his thinking.”

Does Harris want to confiscate guns?published at 23:45 British Summer Time 12 September

    By Merlyn Thomas

Earlier during Donald Trump's rally, he said Kamala Harris “wants to confiscate your guns”.

But his presidential rival doesn’t want to ban all guns.

Her platform says she would only ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

During Tuesday’s debate she said: "We're not taking anybody's guns away", external and noted that both she and her vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz are gun owners.

  10. Harris speaking now at her second rally of the daypublished at 23:40 British Summer Time 12 September

Harris is speaking in Greensboro, North Carolina, after hosting a separate rally in the crucial swing state earlier today.

Addressing the cheering crowd, she slams Trump's debate performance as "the same old show".

"The same old playbook. With no plan for how we should address the needs of the American people."

"Well folks, look. It's time to turn the page."

  12. Trump pledges to end taxes on overtime paypublished at 23:23 British Summer Time 12 September

Trump says that under his administration he will end taxation on overtime pay.

This is the first time he has announced this policy idea.

"That gives people more of an incentive to work," he says, adding that he thinks it will make it easier for companies to find people to hire.

He mentions police officers, nurses and factory workers as those who would benefit from no taxes on overtime.

It comes as he pledges to also end taxes on tips - a policy that he shares with the Harris campaign.

  13. Trump focuses on borderpublished at 22:59 British Summer Time 12 September

Trump has been speaking at length about the US-Mexico border during this rally.

He's in the southwestern US state of Arizona today, a key battleground in the election. And it's a state where immigration is a major issue for voters.

Immigration is viewed as a strong area for Trump, compared to Harris.

And polls have Trump leading Arizona by less than 1 point.

  14. Progressive activist says Trump is doing Harris 'a double favour'published at 22:54 British Summer Time 12 September

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Reporting from Washington

Just moments ago, I spoke to Adam Green, the co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, an organisation which has advised the Harris-Walz campaign on economic messaging.

Green told me that "Trump is scared after getting rolled up on everything from his support for an abortion ban to tax cuts for millionaires".

"He has no interest in not looking presidential again," he says.

An additional debate, Green says, "would potentially help Harris, but could also shake-up the existing glow that surrounds her.

"Donald Trump is doing her a double favour," he added. "It's hard to imagine it not working to her benefit."

Are millions of criminals and mentally ill people entering the US?published at 22:39 British Summer Time 12 September

    By Lucy Gilder

Speaking a little earlier at his rally in Arizona, Donald Trump claimed that the Biden-Harris administration is allowing “millions of criminals and mentally deranged people” to enter the US.

There is no evidence for these kind of numbers.

Official figures, external do not record how many migrants have served time in prison or come from mental institutions.

Of the 1.4 million apprehensions of people crossing the border illegally so far this financial year (to September 2024) - and where the Border Patrol was able to check against law enforcement databases - about 14,700 were found to have previous criminal convictions.

Trump says he won't debate again as Harris calls for another

Trump has repeated the same "prizefighter" analogy he made on social media earlier today, saying that Harris only wants a second debate because "she lost" the fight.

Many political critics have agreed Harris had the better performance in the debate.

Trump said that his first debate against Biden and his second debate against Harris included discussion about all the issues "in great detail".

"Because we've done two debates, and it was successful, there will be no third debate," he says.

This is Trump's first campaign rally since the debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

During that debate, Harris made critical comments about Trump's rallies, triggering an angry response from the former president.

She suggested that Americans watch his rallies for the bizarre "fictional" things he says, "and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom”.

The comment clearly irked Trump, who hit back: "People don't leave my rallies. We have the biggest rallies, the most incredible rallies in the history of politics."

  18. Trump uses rally to make debate rebuttalspublished at 22:23 British Summer Time 12 September

So far Trump is using this rally to make rebuttals against comments made by Kamala Harris during the presidential debate, calling her a "liar".

It's his first public event since the debate, but he did give an interview to Fox & Friends on Wednesday.

The crowd is very receptive to his comments, cheering him on and booing when Harris's name is brought up.
