Scottish singer Lewis Capaldi made an emotional and surprise return to Glastonbury on Friday, two years after he struggled to finish his set at the festival.

His arrival was confirmed when his name flashed up on the video screens at the back of the Pyramid Stage.

There was a huge roar from thousands of fans who had been teipped off about his rumoured performance.

Capaldi has spoken openly about the pressures of touring on his mental and physical health, and about dealing with panic attacks and Tourette syndrome, which he was diagnosed with in 2022.

Read more here about Capaldi’s back-and-forth set with the audience, as he alternated lines with fans who had shown up to give him their love.

It was a bit of a grey start at Worthy Farm but the cloud will continue to break this afternoon with some sunny spells.

Saturday will feel pretty warm and humid with temperatures peaking at around 25°C (77F).

After a muggy night, Sunday should bring plenty of sunshine and heat with highs of 28°C (82.4F).

Monday is going to be hotter still, so it could be quite uncomfortable for anyone making the long journey home.

A woman in a blue patterned t-shirt, red sunglasses looped over the collar, and blonde curly hair and glasses, stands at the front of the Pyramid Stage next to a man wearing a Pulp t-shirt who is facing the stage.

The rumour mill is in overdrive about the mystery band known only as Patchwork, in the line-up for later today.

Ester from Norwich and her friend Ben are already here at the Pyramid Stage, and they're convinced it's Pulp.

"I've seen them 29 times, and this would be the 30th," Ester tells me.

The pair got here at 09:00 and are planning to wait it out till the mystery set at 18:15.

And if it's not Pulp... "I'm going to cry. Go back to my tent," says Ester. "Or start a riot."

Patchwork have a prime place on today's festival line-up - third from the top of the bill on the main Pyramid Stage on the Saturday night, at 18:15.

The only thing is, there's no band called Patchwork.

It's a fake name for a mystery guest - just as an unknown band called The ChurnUps were on the Pyramid bill in 2023, and turned out to be the Foo Fighters.

Main theories as to who Patchwork might be include Britpop heroes Pulp, singing US sister sensation Haim or 2013 headliners Mumford and Sons.

Could there be an outside yet overwhelming chance Oasis return to Glastonbury to reunite a week before their first official gig? Robbie Williams has a new album out which uses a photo of him at Glastonbury in 1995.

Perhaps as an outside, outside chance Oasis and Robbie Williams could form a supergroup. Unlikely!

Morning from London – hope everyone at Worthy Farm managed some shut-eye in those tents.

We’re back for Glastonbury, and what a line-up it is today. Neil Young and The Chrome Hearts are headlining, with Charli XCX, Doechii, Raye, John Fogerty and plenty more on the bill.

And today’s also the day we finally find out who Patchwork really are – the mysterious band hiding under a fake name on the Pyramid Stage at 18:15 BST.

If you’re one of those stuck at home, you can catch our live stream from around 11:30 BST.

And right here on this live page, we’ll have all the latest from the festival, with running commentary and updates as they happen.

  8. Sun sets on first day of mainstagespublished at 23:01 British Summer Time 27 June

It's been a fantastic day at Glastonbury, with explosive sets from Busta Rhymes, Self Esteem, CMAT and PinkPantheress delighting the crowd before headline act The 1975 closed out the night.

Lewis Capaldi made a surprise - albeit heavily rumoured - return to the Pyramid Stage. This set was his first full-scale show in two years.

The singer was not the first surprise performer of Friday's festivities, however.

That honour went to Lorde, who popped up to open the Woodsies stage, playing her new album Virgin in its entirety.

We're going to pause our coverage for now, but we'll be back again tomorrow to bring you all action once again.

    Good night, and happy camping!

The first day of Glastonbury’s main stages is drawing to a close and, although people complained about the line-up when it was first announced, we’ve had a pretty special one.

Surprise sets from Lorde and Lewis Capaldi provided a sense of occasion, we saw Paul McCartney bopping to Inhaler, and Jarvis Cocker DJ’d on the Greenpeace stage.

Alanis Morissette and Busta Rhymes resurrected the 1990s, and Lola Young and PinkPantheress showed us the future of UK music.

The 1975 are proving themselves worthy of the headline slot right now - Matty Healy simultaneously cocksure and humble as they pull out all their biggest hits.

And tomorrow, we’ve got Charli XCX, Doechii and the elusive Patchwork to look forward to. Not bad, eh?

The 1975 haven’t played a gig since last March. Not even a small warm-up show. But they are totally match fit.

As they break into a muscular version of Love Me, Matty is prowling the catwalk and the sides of the stage like an uncaged tiger. “How have you guys been?” he asks.

“We cannot thank you enough for coming to see our band," he says, then it’s straight into She’s American.

Their energy hasn’t flagged for one second.

With a flicker of static, some staccato strings and a lone saxophone, The 1975 came on stage and launched into their first song, Happiness.

Frontman Matty Healy is swigging from a pint glass already. This could be a fun night.

It's their only show of the year, and the band has reportedly spent four times their festival fee on a specially designed set.

Headlining for the first time, here comes The 1975 to a huge cheer from the crowd.

  13. Self Esteem tears up the Park Stagepublished at 21:59 British Summer Time 27 June

Lucy Taylor Smith - Self Esteem - explodes on to the Park Stage with an ensemble of handmaids - clad in black and white dresses - serenading the audience with Mother and 69 from her latest album, A Complicated Woman.

The word 'Deranged' is emblazoned in neon white behind her.

As her set progresses, she moves into some old favourites that get the crowd going - the handmaiden outfits are discarded for black and white sporty chic to a roar of applause.

Loyle Carner tells the BBC's Katie Razzall he is 'nervous' about headlining the Other Stage

Loyle Carner tells me he is “overwhelmed, nervous, excited” about headlining the Other Stage tonight.

He raced out his new album Hopefully! in time for the Festival. “I know that it’s not happening next year, it’s a fallow year, and you never know when it’s going to be your last chance," he says.

He’s singing on the album for the first time. “I don’t do it because I’m good at it, I do it because it feels good,” he tells me. And it makes him nervous for tonight.

“I really didn’t think it through, because I’m about to do it in front of a lot of people, for only the third time in my life," he says - he had two small warm up gigs earlier this week.

His new songs are vulnerable and intimate - trademark Carner. I have a feeling he’ll be fine.

Busta Rhymes is pulling out all the stops on the Other Stage.

He’s got Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson to record special video greetings, to accompany their collaborations I Know What You Want and What’s It Gonna Be.

He’s delved into his back catalogue for Woo Hah (Got You All In Check) and Scenario - the Tribe Called Quest track that provided his breakout moment. There’s a bit too much stopping and starting. But when he busts out the breakneck, run-the-gauntlet rapid fire verse of Look At Me Now, he’s unbeatable.

“We represent that real hip-hop culture,” says Busta. “We don’t need no special effects. You know why? Because we are the special effects.”

Glastonbury 'jewel in the crown' for BBC

Biffy Clyro have discarded their shirts and Busta Rhymes has paused spitting bars on the Other Stage to tell us a story - a perfect time to take a step back and let you know how you can follow along at home.

We're aiming for more than 90 hours of streamed performances with coverage across TV, radio, iPlayer, online and social media.

The Glastonbury Hits Channel has been live since early June, while the Glastonbury Channel went live this afternoon.

On TV, there will be extensive coverage on BBC One, Two and Four, while radio teams from six BBC radio networks will be providing hours of live coverage with more available on BBC Sounds.

This year the BBC is also introducing audio description for coverage on BBC One, and the Pyramid Stage will be streamed live in British Sign Language for the third year.

And of course we'll be bringing you updates right here - we've also got the main stages covered if you head to the watch & listen tab at the top of this page.

  18. Busta Rhymes gets the Other Stage crowd bouncingpublished at 20:47 British Summer Time 27 June

    Mark Savage
    Music correspondent, reporting from Glastonbury

Busta Rhymes’ introductory video sees comedian and actor Chris Rock laying down the law.

“Are you ready to be taught by a real MC?” he asks. “He always closes the show.” The effect is ruined slightly when Busta comes out and his mic isn’t properly faded up.

But when the opening bars to Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See ring out, the crowd starts bouncing.

There’s a nice bit of stagecraft to get the audience in the mood - with the star’s hype man pretending to adjust his volume, bringing him from a muted mumble to a roaring holler as the first verse progresses.

  20. Ever wondered how Glastonbury is policed?published at 20:01 British Summer Time 27 June

Just how do you go about policing a tented city in the Somerset countryside?

Chief Superintendent Olly Cosgrove from Avon and Somerset Police has been chatting to the BBC's Inside Glastonbury series on BBC Sounds.

He says planning for the festival "pretty much never stops" and bicycles are "the best way" to get across the site quickly when needed.

So what are the police used for most on site? "Probably directions if I'm honest," the chief superintendent says, adding: "It's a lovely event, there's very little crime."
