    Labour MP for Leeds East, which covers Harehills, Richard Burgon said he had been speaking with residents about the "very serious incidents".

    He added: "They care passionately about their community. They want the disorder to end. They want those pushing misinformation from afar to stop."

    In an updated statement issued in the early hours of Friday, West Yorkshire Police say they believe the disorder was caused by “a criminal minority intent on disrupting community relations”.

    Officers reviewing footage of the incident say all criminal offences would be investigated and "the full weight of the law" will be brought against those responsible.

    No injuries have been reported at this stage, they add.

    A dedicated website for reports and footage submissions will also be set up by police.

    A First double decker on nearby street Foundry Approach was torched and destroyed as crowds continued to gather in the area.

    A number of other fires were lit as the evening progressed.

    Large crowds gathered around a police car with a number of people attempting to smash the vehicle's windows.

    Eventually a group of people lifted the car and tipped it over in the street.

    Disturbances broke out after police were called to an incident at 17:00 BST on Thursday.

    West Yorkshire Police said they were called to an "ongoing incident" at an address in Harehills.

    They said officers attended and found an ongoing disturbance which involved some agency workers and some children.

    A spokesperson said a decision was taken to remove the agency workers and children as more people gathered.

    Police said "pockets of disorder" broke out.

    A number of roads were closed and police asked people to avoid the area.
