Love is in the air at the Balloon Fiesta … quite literally for some.

Debbie Adlam and Gary Morris met at the event in 2005 and are celebrating their 20th anniversary together this year.

Ms Adlam thinks the fiesta is a perfect spot for romance.

“It’s just a special event – when you seen the balloons going up. It’s just so atmospheric.”

But she joked she was still waiting for her proposal at the night glow – a traditional moment to get down on one knee among balloon fans.

  3. Perfect weather conditions bring in the crowdspublished at 13:20 British Summer Time

Clive Bailey, one of the event’s organisers, said this morning’s crowd was the largest he had ever seen on a Friday at the fiesta.

Pilots were blessed with perfect conditions – not too hot, which limits the balloons’ payload, meaning they can take fewer passengers, and not too wet, which can cause turbulence.

Conditions for the night glow are also expected to be good.

“This evening the night glow is absolutely going to be stunning and I think it’s going to be extremely busy.

"We’ve never had crowds on a Friday morning like we had this morning. So imagine how busy tonight will be,” Mr Bailey said.

The team behind the light bulb balloon have decided to give up on inflating it due to the breeze.

Matt Joyce, owner of MJ Ballooning, told the BBC that he had only acquired the balloon yesterday, and has yet to have a chance to fly it.

“The wind just got a little bit too much for us. But the Phillips light bulb, it’s 30 years since it first debuted at the Fiesta, but it only arrived in Bristol yesterday and we put it straight in the van and brought it here.”

MJ Balloons only flies “special shape” balloons – and the light bulb is the company’s 13th unusual acquisition.

This afternoon Mr Joyce said he was hoping to inflate the Snow White balloon and Sonic the Hedgehog, and added he might get a chance to fly the light bulb on Sunday.

Mr Bailey said the last time the Fiesta beat the weather to claim all the ascents was in 2015.
