Starmer touts progress on Ukrainepublished at 12:04 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March

The PM has spent much of his time in recent weeks on talks about ending the war in Ukraine and the implications of that.

The BBC has been told the UK was “intimately involved” in getting a ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and the US over the line.

So at the top of PMQs, it's no wonder Starmer is keen to demonstrate what’s been achieved in Saudi Arabia, and the UK government’s role in it.

Starmer says the UK most redouble efforts to secure a lasting peace.

We've got three minutes to go - just enough time to squeeze in a bit more on one of our top stories.

The prime minister this week called the current benefits system unsustainable, indefensible and unfair, and said wrong incentives are discouraging people from working.

Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall is expected to set out welfare changes and cut the benefits bill in the coming weeks.

Changes likely to be announced in the coming days include restrictions on eligibility for the Personal Independent Payment (PIP), which provides help with extra living costs to those with a long-term physical or mental health condition, and cuts to incapacity benefits for people unable to work and receiving Universal Credit.

It's a move that has caused some friction within the Labour Party. Whether or not it'll come up at PMQs is in the hands of MPs.

  5. The week in politics - a digestpublished at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March

Developments on the international stage have dominated headlines so far this week.

Ukraine was yesterday's focus, with Kyiv and the US reaching an agreement over a proposed ceasefire deal with Russia - which government sources tell the BBC the UK was "intimately involved" in securing.

For now, though, here's some of the latest news closer to home:

    • The Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into suspended Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe over an allegation of "verbal threats". He's denied any wrongdoing
    • The government said it supports bereavement leave for couples who experience a miscarriage before 24 weeks
    • Starmer said the current welfare system was "the worst of all worlds", discouraging people from working while producing a "spiralling bill"
    • The PM also told ministers they should take more responsibility for decisions rather than “outsourcing” them to regulators
    • The resignation of Labour MP Mike Amesbury - who was sentenced for repeatedly punching a constituent - triggered the first by-election in Starmer’s government
    • Local authorities are to be given greater powers to seize land, under government plans to boost housebuilding
  6. Starmer heads for Commonspublished at 11:34 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March
