This is Bill Clinton's 12th consecutive DNC speech. His first one was in 1980 at age 33, 12 years before he became president.

He turned 78 a few days ago.

I just want to point out that "I'm still younger than Donald Trump," Clinton jokes on stage

Clinton says he wants to talk about President Joe Biden: He had an "improbable" turn to become president he says, in the middle of the pandemic, and has now dealt with wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Now, Clinton says, he has "voluntarily" given up his power, comparing Biden to George Washington and saying the move will be Biden's legacy.

For what seems like the dozenth time this week, the crowd chants "Thank you, Joe".

  3. Clinton praises Obamas and his wife, Hillarypublished at 02:24 British Summer Time 22 August

To loud applause from the crowd, Clinton begins his speech by saying that he enjoyed Michelle and Barack Obama's speech - as well as that of his wife, Hillary Clinton.

"Hillary gave a great speech, didn't she?"

  4. Bill Clinton walks out to Coldplaypublished at 02:20 British Summer Time 22 August

Yes, Coldplay. The crowd seems excited. He's the second former president to address this convention, after Barack Obama yesterday.

    Reporting from the convention

We've just heard from Hakeem Jeffries, the current House Minority Leader and an outspoken supporter of Kamala Harris.

Jeffries begins by praising Biden for "selflessly passing the torch" to Harris. "Together, let's make Kamala Harris the 47th president of the United States of America," he says.

"We will fight hard to make sure that the American Dream is alive and well in every single community," he adds.

He's also compares Donald Trump to an "old boyfriend" who "just won't go away."

"Bro, we broke up with you for a reason," he says to a thunderous round of applause. "Trump is a chaos agent."

"There's no reason for us to get back together," he adds.

  6. Can Bill Clinton excite the crowd?published at 02:14 British Summer Time 22 August

Bill Clinton is set to speak shortly.

He was long known as the Democrats’ great communicator. Now he’s a little older, and a little frailer, so I’ll be keen to see whether he still has what it takes to excite a crowd.

Trump has disavowed role in Project 2025 - but it's political gold for Democratspublished at 02:10 British Summer Time 22 August

    Anthony Zurcher
North America correspondent, at the convention

Project 2025 is the gift that keeps on giving for Democrats.

While the Heritage Foundation’s blueprint for the next Republican presidency was created independently of the Trump campaign - and has been disavowed by former president himself - many former Trump administration officials were involved in its creation.

While many of the plan’s authors could have positions in a future Trump administration, there’s no guarantee that Project 2025 will be implemented - either in full or in part.

  8. Is Oprah going to turn up on stage?published at 02:06 British Summer Time 22 August

It appears Oprah might make an appearance tonight at the DNC.

Multiple US media reports indicate the former TV host - a Democratic fundraiser and one of the most famous women in the world - will play a part in tonight's program.

CNN, which broke the news, cited multiple sources with knowledge of tonight's events that said Oprah will throw her support behind Harris and participate in Walz's acceptance of the vice-presidential nomination.

Saturday Night Live comedian Kenan Thompson has just taken the stage, holding a large 900 page book of Project 2025.

The document is billed as a policy "wish list" for the next Republican president that would vastly expand presidential powers and impose an ultra-conservative social vision on the US.

While Trump has sought to distance himself from the document, it has repeatedly come up during the DNC as a warning from Democrats.

"This is what you're signing up for with a second Trump presidency," he says, prompting laughter from the crowd.

As he goes through various parts of the document, the crowd erupts with loud chants of "boo!"

Capitol attack drama and Trump's role get spotlightpublished at 02:00 British Summer Time 22 August

    Anthony Zurcher
North America correspondent, at the convention

The lights dimmed in the Democratic convention hall a little earlier, and for roughly five minutes, the overhead screens played video footage of the 6 January 2021 attack on the US capitol by Donald Trump supporters.

Ominous music accompanied audio of increasingly dire police radio transmissions, as the situation that day spiralled out of control. Toward the end of the video, the audio switched to recordings of Donald Trump, pledging to pardon many of the 1,600 individuals who were arrested and prosecuted for their participation in the attack - eliciting boos from the crowd.

This is the first presidential election since the 6 January attack. While Joe Biden had made Trump’s efforts to overturn the election a central focus of his campaign, Kamala Harris has moved away from such dire warnings. But for at least a few minutes on Wednesday night here in Chicago, the Capitol attack was the focus once again.

Everyone has just risen out of their seats and erupted in applause as Stevie Wonder just walked onto the stage.

Wonder stumped a number of times for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and has been an outspoken critic of Donald Trump.

Wonder, who is blind, once told a reporter that allowing Trump to run the country was like “asking me to drive a car”.

Music icon Stevie Wonder has just appeared on stage at the DNC - quite the departure in tone on an evening that has mostly been filled with speeches by politicians and elected officials.

He encourages the crowd to vote for Kamala Harris.

"Now is the time" to win the "disenchanted" and those with "angry hearts", he says, "as we stand between history's pain and tomorrow's promises, we must choose courage over complacency".

From my vantage point up in the stands, it seems like there are musicians standing up there with him. Let's see if we get a performance.

  13. January 6 committee member thanks God rioters failedpublished at 01:50 British Summer Time 22 August

Bennie Thompson, former January 6 committee chairman, has just finished speaking, echoing a similar sentiment as others about "not going back".

The members of the January 6 mob wanted to stop the peaceful transfer of power, "for the first time in American democracy - thank God they failed", he said.

"In this country we settle our differences at the ballot box, not through violence", Thompson added.

  14. Former Capitol Police officer takes the stagepublished at 01:47 British Summer Time 22 August

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Reporting from the convention

We're now hearing from Aquilino Gonell, a former Capitol Police officer who was attacked during the 6 January riots.

He's become an extremely vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, who he blames for what happened on that day.

We spoke to him yesterday at the United Center.

"It's a betrayal," he said. "[Republicans] support 'law and order' and 'the rule of law', they support the police - except not Capitol Police, because they stopped their sympathisers from doing whatever the heck they wanted."

Trump's former fixer tells reporters at the DNC that Kamala Harris will trounce his ex-boss in the upcoming presidential debates.

"Let's be serious for a second," says Michael Cohen, who was convicted of bank and tax fraud. "Let's stop trying to elevate Donald Trump into something he's not. He's not a master debater, alright? He's horrible."

Cohen says that President Joe Biden failed to fact-check Trump in their debate in June, but he says that Harris won't have the same problem.

He says that he wouldn't have had an issue, either - if given the chance.

"If it was me on that day, I would have tore him to shreds," he says. "Imagine what Kamala is going to do to him."

He says that voters won't be able to ignore Trump's debate performance, his upcoming sentencing in September, the former president's impeachments, and ongoing legal troubles.

"I think it's going to be Kamala."

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Reporting from the convention

Delegates are also hearing from Republican former Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, who tells them that his party has turned into a "cult" for Donald Trump

"If you vote for Kamala Harris in 2024, you're not a Democrat," he says. "You're a patriot."

Duncan adds that he believes Harris "understands right from wrong, and good from evil".

"She's a steady hand that will bring leadership to the White House, something that Donald Trump could never do."

Delegates are now being shown a video of the 6 January 2021 riot at the US Capitol, which Democrats blame Trump for instigating.

At the age of 17, Beatrice Schierer and Isaac Winkler are the youngest delegates from Minnesota.

Schierer says she believes Governor Tim Walz will “inspire America and ignite” the crowd tonight.

“We Minnesotans know what a genuine guy he is,” Winkler says, mentioning a programme Walz pushed through to provide free lunches in schools.

Winkler hopes Walz will speak about unity at a time when the country seems divided.

“I’m sure he’ll make a great impression,” he says.

We're now hearing from Olivia Troye, a senior adviser to former president Vice-President Mike Pence during the Trump administration.

Speaking to a crowd of Democrats, the lifelong Republican is warning delegates that the inside of the Trump White House was "terrifying".

Another Trump administration, she says, would be worse.

"The few adults in the room resigned, or were fired," she adds.

She is now voting for Kamala Harris.

"We agree on the most important issue: protecting our freedom," she says to applause. "To my fellow Republicans: you aren't voting for a Democrat. You're voting for Democracy."

We're hearing more about immigration, this time from California's Pete Aguilar, the chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

Aguilar is praising Harris's steps to encourage legal immigration and pathways to residency, while at the same time enforcing border security.

"We don't have to choose between a secure border and building an America for all," he says. "Under President Harris, we can and will do both."

"As president, she will fight for pathways to citizenship," Aguilar adds.

"And I can tell you, as the highest-ranking Latino in Congress, our community understands the stake in this election because we believe in the promise of this country."
