Gunfire can be heard in the background and people can be seen running from the area.
Witnesses that spoke to CBS News have described a vehicle driving into a crowd on New Orleans' Bourbon Street, before a driver exited the vehicle and fired a weapon.

We're now hearing from city's emergency preparedness department that people in New Orleans are being told to avoid the area where the incident occurred.
Nola Ready - the City of New Orleans department responsible for emergency preparedness - warns residents to avoid the area of Canal and Bourbon streets.
"There has been a mass casualty incident on Canal and Bourbon Street. Get yourself away from the area," Nola Ready says in a post on X.
There are no details about what happened to cause the mass casualty incident in the post.

CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, reports that there has been a possible mass casualty incident after a vehicle ran into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
Witnesses told a reporter at CBS News that:
- A vehicle drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street at a high speed, before the driver then reportedly got out and began firing a weapon. Police then returned fire
- Multiple people were on the ground with injuries, the eyewitness says
- A New Orleans Police spokesperson told CBS News "initial reports show a car may have plowed into a group of people. Injuries are unknown but there are reported fatalities”
