    It's almost home time for us after a busy day covering Storm Darragh.

    We'll be pausing our live updates for now, but the team will be back on Sunday morning with the latest as the clear up continues.

    22,000 customers are still without power and NIE says it may be Monday before all power is returned.

    The following leisure centres will be open from 14:00 GMT - 16:00 GMT on Sunday to offer assistance to those still without power:

    • South Lake Leisure Centre in Craigavon
    • Lagan Valley Leisureplex in Lisburn
    • Ards Blair Mayne in Newtownards
    • Seven Towers in Ballymena
    • Cookstown Leisure Centre
    • Kilkeel Leisure Centre
    • Fermanagh Lakeland Forum

    Additionally, Coleraine Leisure Centre will open from noon until 15:00 GMT.

    The centres will offer warm drinks, charging and changing facilities and NIE staff will be there to answer any queries.

  3. Concrete tile smashes car windscreenpublished at 23:24 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

    The windscreen of a car belonging to a Bangor woman was smashed by a falling concrete ridge tile.

    "Thankfully it was parked in the driveway and no one was hurt," the car owner said.

    Damage was also caused to the bonnet of the car.

    Tonight will continue very windy with strong northerly gusts. There will be a mix of clear spells and blustery showers to start but the showers will become isolated overnight.

    Sunday

    Tomorrow will continue windy to start. There should be some patchy cloud to start but this should soon clear, leaving plenty of winter sunshine. Winds easing later on.

    Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

    Monday will be a dry day with wintry sunshine and light winds. A cold night with mostly clear skies. Tuesday will continue dry and chilly with bright spells but it will turn cloudier through the afternoon. Wednesday will be a dull and overcast day but it will stay largely dry. Remaining chilly.

    Isobel Buchanan, who lives near the village of Ardmore in County Londonderry, says the storm was frightening.

    "The internet went down at ten to one this morning and we then found out that a tree had come down and taken out a telegraph pole, so we are waiting on that to be fixed," she says.

    "It was lashing rain during the storm and there were high winds. It was actually quite scary."

    Police say the Head Road in Annalong is closed between the Ballyveaghmore Road and the Oldtown Road due to a number of fallen trees which has affected overhead cables.

    Motorists should avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

    NIE Networks will open community assistance centres across Northern Ireland as 22,000 homes remain without power following Storm Darragh.

    Sustained gusts caused "extensive damage" to the electricity network, NIE says, causing 48,000 customers at peak to lose power.

    As of 21:00 GMT on Saturday, engineering teams have restored power to more than 25,000 customers and hope that a small number will also have power restored overnight.

    NIE Networks estimate that it may be a number of days before they can reconnect all affected customers.

    "We would ask customers to bear with us as our teams work to restore power," NIE customer and market services director Edel Creery says.

    "Additionally, we would ask members of the public to check in on relatives, friends and neighbours who may require further support and also ensure that their power cut has been reported."

    From 14:00 to 16:00 GMT on Sunday 8 December, leisure centres in the following areas will open to offer assistance to those still without power:

  8. Minister says late postponements left fans in 'appalling situation'published at 21:29 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

    Communities Minister Gordon Lyons says late postponements in three Premiership games on Saturday left fans in an "appalling situation".

    All six matches were called off because of Storm Darragh, although Linfield's game against Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park and Coleraine's home encounter with Portadown were postponed just 70 minutes before the scheduled kick-off.

    The match between Cliftonville and Carrick Rangers at Solitude was postponed just 15 minutes earlier.

    Many supporters of the clubs involved had already travelled to the venues.

    Writing on X, Lyons said: "This is totally unacceptable and the authorities must ensure this doesn't happen again.

    "Clarity could and should have been provided earlier in order to keep people safe and save time and money for everyone involved."

    Belfast City Council have published updated information regarding closures and planned essential maintenance, external during and following Storm Darragh.

    • Parks, pitches, open spaces, public toilets and playgrounds are closed and will remain closed on Sunday 8 December for essential maintenance following Storm Darragh
    • Cemeteries will remain closed on Sunday for essential maintenance following Storm Darragh
    • The Christmas Market at Belfast City Hall is closed today, but will reopen at 12 noon on Sunday
    • A decision will be made re: recycling centres at noon on Sunday

    Storm Darragh has been battering Northern Ireland with severe gusts on Saturday.

    The strongest gusts include:

    • 78mph (126km/h) at Orlock Head in Down
    • 71mph (114km/h) at Kilowen in Down
    • 68mph (109km/h) at Magilligan in Derry
    • 64mph (103km/h) at Lough Fea in Tyrone
    • 64mph (103km/h) at Ballypatrick in Antrim
    • 61mph (98km/h) at Portglenone in Antrim
    • 60mph (97km/h) in Glenanne in Armagh

    In the Republic of Ireland, gusts of 87mph were recorded in County Galway late last night as the storm moved in from the Atlantic.

    Ann Glasgow says a massive tree came down outside her Waterside home in Londonderry.

    She says there was a huge gust of wind and the massive tree toppled over destroying one car and damaging another. It left neighbours in total shock.

    “It's so lucky it didn’t come down earlier as there are always children playing outside," she said.

    "There could have been casualties or even worse someone killed."

  13. Restoration 'will take a number of days'published at 18:09 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

    As of 17:00 GMT, 48,000 customers remain without power in Northern Ireland, NIE says.

    NIE says its teams are working to assess damage across the network, but debris on roads is impacting restoration efforts.

    "From our experience of previous significant weather events, we anticipate complete restoration will take a number of days," a spokesperson says.

    Members of the public are reminded to never approach broken power lines or damaged poles.

    NIE staff are currently carrying out welfare visits to vulnerable customers and offering support when needed.

    Hundreds of additional staff have been brought in to help reinforce NIE's normal capability and additional call agents are available to deal with any queries customers may have regarding the repair process in their area.

    "We would like to remind customers that if they should experience a power cut they can report the fault online, external or call the NIE Networks Customer Helpline on 03457 643 643," the company said in a statement.

  14. Coleraine-Derry rail line re-openspublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

    Translink says the rail line between Londonderry and Coleraine has reopened.

    The track between Coleraine and Belfast remains closed at this time.

    "Speed restrictions are in place until further notice so please allow for knock on delay/disruption," Translink said.

    For real-time updates, passengers are advised to use Translink's journey checker, external.

    Elsewhere, due to an obstruction on the line at Bleach Green Junction, the Larne line is blocked.

    Services on this line will be delayed. Disruption is expected until further notice.

  15. Thousands still without power in Republicpublished at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

    Almost 325,000 customers are without power in the Republic following Storm Darragh.

    ESB crews are working to restore power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses while local authorities have been working to clear roads of fallen trees and debris.

    The amber warning for strong winds across Northern Ireland has ended early.

    It was originally forecast by the Met Office to last until 21:00 GMT on Saturday.

    Instead, a yellow warning for strong wind remains in place across Northern Ireland until 06:00 GMT on Sunday.

    Winds will slowly ease through the rest of Saturday and overnight into Sunday.

    A large garden tree ripped out by the roots fallen onto the front of a bungalow style home

    A homeowner is dealing with the aftermath of a large tree falling and damaging her home in south Belfast.

    Nuala Murphy told BBC News NI she woke up to a big bang at about 03:30 BST on Saturday.

    "I didn't know what it was. I got out of bed and investigated but couldn't see anything," she said.

    She found broken plaster and smashed glass at the top landing.

    "It was only at daylight that we realised that the tree had actually been uprooted and fallen into the roof," she said.

    "What did you do when a tree lands in your house. I wasn't prepared for this."

    She's currently waiting for a tree surgeon to come out to make the house safe.

    "It looks like the roof is going to fall through on the inside and there is water coming through into the bedrooms and hallway," she added.

  18. Irish Premiership games called off due to Storm Darraghpublished at 16:12 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December

    Storm Darragh has caused the postponement of six of Saturday's Irish Premiership games.

    The game between Dungannon Swifts and leaders Linfield was called off just over an hour before the scheduled 15:00 GMT kick-off and came after Cliftonville's home game against Carrick Rangers was postponed.

    The fixtures between Glentoran and Ballymena United at the Oval, Glenavon and Crusaders at Mourneview Park and Loughgall and Larne at Lakeview Park were called off on Saturday morning.

    The match between the Glens and the Sky Blues was postponed following a pitch inspection at 10:30 GMT, with the games between the Lurgan Blues and the Crues and the Villagers and the Invermen following later.

    Premier Intermediate League matches between Tobermore United and Oxford Sunnyside and Knockbreda and Lisburn Distillery have been called off.

    Thematch between Coleraine and Portadown, which was to start at 17:00 GMT, was the last of the games to fall victim of the high winds.

    In GAA, the Ulster Club Intermediate Football Championship final between Arva and Ballinderry at Healy Park has also been postponed.

    The driver of an airport bus travelling from Belfast which crashed into a building overnight has been discharged from hospital.

    Translink said: “We can confirm that one of our buses was involved in a road traffic collision on Ballyrobin Road, Antrim, in the early hours of Saturday 7 December.

    "The driver, who was the only person on board at the time, was taken to hospital for treatment.

    "The driver has since been discharged from hospital. An internal investigation is under way."
