One of the freed hostages - Ofer Kalderon - has just landed at Sheba Hospital in Ramat Gan, Israel, after being transported in an Israeli Air Force helicopter to reunite with members of his family.

In a statement released earlier, his family said they are "overwhelmed with joy, relief, and emotion after 484 long and difficult days of unbearable waiting".

"Today, we finally embrace Ofer, seeing and truly comprehending that he is here with us," a statement released on their behalf says.

They add he "endured months in a nightmare", holding onto the "hope of embracing his children again".

There will be a tough rehabilitation period ahead, but they add "we will do everything necessary to help him stand on his feet again".

They also thank everyone who has supported them throughout this time, and ask for privacy.

"We have no right to stop until all 79 hostages return home - whether for rehabilitation or for burial," the statement adds.

  6. Analysis

Swift, orderly releases are only the beginning of proceedingspublished at 09:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

Middle East correspondent, in Tel Aviv

It was a swift, orderly release compared to Thursday's hostage release which turned very chaotic.

Today what we saw was two lines of Hamas gunmen, pushing back a small crowd that had gathered.

The Red Cross was quickly in place, the two men were brought out onto a stage and then handed over and taken away from the scene - which will come as a huge relief.

Today, the family of Yarden Bibas have said they have mixed feelings about Yarden's release.

There's much relief to see him coming home but at the same time, knowing that his wife Shiri and his two sons have not returned with him, hopes are dimming that they have survived.

Hamas did say earlier in the war that the three had been killed by an Israeli airstrike but the Israeli military has said it can't verify that, keeping some hopes alive.

This is just the beginning of proceedings today, if all goes to plan, as more than 180 Palestinians prisoners are set to be freed - more than 100 of those are from Gaza, and about 70 have been serving life or lengthy sentences in Israeli jails.

We should also see the reopening of the Rafah crossing with Egypt - what Gaza calls it's gateway to the world - so that medical evacuations can take place as well.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) say released hostage Ofer Kalderon "is now taking off in an Israeli Air Force helicopter to the hospital, where he will reunite with members of his family and receive medical treatment".

The hostage freed alongside Kalderon, Yarden Bibas - and members of his family, are "due to take off soon to fly to the hospital," the IDF adds.

We've been watching a live feed this morning of two military helicopters at an Israeli military base. One took off in the last few minutes.

The three Israeli men due to be freed today have now all been released by Hamas.

Yarden Bibas, 34, whose two sons are the youngest hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023, was released earlier this morning in the southern city of Khan Younis. His wife Shiri, 33, and his two sons - Ariel , five, and Kfir, two - have not yet been released with the Israeli military saying they are "extremely concerned" about their welfare.

Ofer Kalderon, 53, a French-Israeli, was also released in Khan Younis today. He was taken from Nir Oz along with his two children, Erez and Sahar - both children were released in November 2023 as part of an earlier temporary ceasefire. French President Macron has welcomed his release.

Keith Siegel, 65, a US-Israeli citizen, was taken by Hamas along with his wife Adrienne, also known as Aviva, from their home in Kfar Aza. Adrienne was released in November 2023.

As a reminder, the three hostages have been freed in exchange for more than 180 Palestinian prisoners, who are expected to be released later today.

Huge crowds gathered as Israeli hostage Arbel Yehud was released in Khan Younis on Thursday

As two male Israeli hostages have been freed amid "orderly scenes" this morning, we've been referring to the "chaotic handover" that took place in southern Gaza on Thursday. Here's a recap of what happened:

The release of two Israeli hostages and five Thai nationals happened near the destroyed house of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces in Gaza last year.

"There was a lot of chaos, there was a lot of pushing," a journalist told the BBC on Thursday. He says people were chanting for Hamas's al-Qassam brigades and for Sinwar.

Footage showed Israeli hostage Arbel Yehud, 29, surrounded by armed and masked Hamas gunmen who struggled to hold back a huge crowd.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the chaos as "shocking" and delayed the release of Palestinian prisoners "until the safe exit of our hostages is guaranteed in the next few days".

Shortly after, Netanyahu's office said "mediators delivered a commitment that a safe exit will be guaranteed for hostages who will be released in the next rounds" and the 110 Palestinian prisoners were released.

  14. More than 180 Palestinian prisoners to be freedpublished at 07:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

We are expecting 183 prisoners to be released from Israeli prisons later today.

More than 100 of those are from Gaza, and about 70 have been facing lengthy or life sentences in Israeli jails.

Details on the ages and genders of those to be released are not yet known.

The happiness here over the release of Yarden Bibas is clouded with worry over his wife and two young children, who were also kidnapped on 7 October 2023.

Andrea Wittenberg, 32, holds up a photo of Kfir Bibas, who was just nine months old when he was taken hostage, as she watches the live footage.

“They are children. They should be at home. It is impossible for them to be in Gaza,” she says.

As we reported earlier, Hamas claimed in November 2023 that Yarden's wife Shiri and her two sons had been killed in an Israeli air strike, but the Israeli military has not confirmed their deaths.

Andrea says she is holding out hope that they are still alive.

“I don’t want to give up,” she says.

  17. Mixed emotions as two Israeli hostages freedpublished at 07:18 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February

    Alice Cuddy
    Reporting from Tel Aviv

I've just been speaking to Liz Domsky and her husband as they watched live streamed footage of the release of two Israeli hostages, in Hostages Square, Tel Aviv.

Liz says she has "mixed emotions" - happiness for the men returning home to Israel but also worry for those who remain in Gaza.

"They all need to come home," she says. "I have a student there, Bar Kupershtein. I was a teacher in the high school where he studied. We are very worried about him. We hope he'll come back. He's not in the first list," she says.

The couple say they were very worried about how the hostages would be passed to the Red Cross today."We thought we would see something not nice but of course it's better [than Thursday]," she says.

Yarden’s wife Shiri, 33, and two sons, Kfir, nine months, and Ariel, four - at the time of their capture - were also abducted from their home in the Nir Oz kibbutz. Kfir was the youngest hostage to be taken.

Hamas claimed in November 2023 that Shiri and the two boys had been killed in an Israeli air strike, but the Israeli military has not confirmed their deaths.

The Bibas family were on a list of 34 names that Hamas had said it was willing to release ahead of the ceasefire agreement earlier in January.
