An ABC reporter on the ground in Porepunkah has just described what's happening on the scene, saying the large police presence that descended on the small alpine town earlier has now thinned out.

A local State Emergency Service (SES) team has arrived, the reporter says, but the frantic first hour when the reports of a shooting first emerged has changed dramatically.

"It was quite chaotic when I got here," Ashlee Aldridge said.

"Since the news that those two officers have been killed and a has been injured, the mood has become quite sombre."

Victoria Police say it's still an "active incident" in the area and urged the public to stay away.
