    The Chief Fire Officer of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, Fin Monahan, says the fire rescue service declared a "major incident" earlier on today.

    "It's been a very busy morning," he says, adding that the rainfall is expected to subside later on today.

    Morgan says there was a yellow weather warning but they decided to treat it as a more serious amber warning.

    He adds resources have been stretched overnight but dozens of contractors have been called in.

    He says one bridge that was under construction was completely washed away. It was replaced after Storm Denis.

    Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Morgan, begins by saying around 200 - 300 commercial and residential properties have been affected by today's flooding.

    The rainfall from today has surpassed some records set by Storm Dennis in 2020, Cllr Morgan adds.

    While there's been "significant flooding" in Pontypridd, he says, there hasn't been "major flooding that we saw in Storm Dennis further down the valley".

    The River Taff has burst its banks again in Pontypridd.

    Many of the properties that were flooded in Storm Dennis in 2020 have been flooded again in Sion Street.

    Residents have been bailing out the front of their homes.

    One resident who was previously flooded said they had no warning and just found the water coming in at 08:00.

  7. 'River flooding caught us out again,' says council leaderpublished at 14:44 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    "Looking at the damage today, I don’t see how this isn’t a red weather warning," says Pontypridd council leader Andrew Morgan.

    He there has been significant flooding across Rhondda Cynon Taf, where the river has broken it’s bank in a number of locations, in Aberavon, Mountain Ash and at Abercynon.

    "We have given out thousands of sandbags, but yet again the intensity of the weather has simply overwhelmed," he says.

    "The scale of the weather I am amazed this was only a yellow weather warning.

    "The river flooding has caught us out again."

    Morgan estimates that a couple of hundred houses have been flooded so far, with debris, big branches and boulders being swept down into the streets.

    Firefighters were called to the A4106 Bwlch Road from Treorchy to Nantymoel overnight after heavy rain caused a number of landslips after debris was strewn across the road.

    Another landslip on the Brecon Mountain Railway in Pant, Merthyr Tydfil, has brought a halt to all Santa train events.

    Announcing the cancellation, the organisation says everyone booked on will be contacted and reiterated that no-one should travel to the site today.

    For context: A landslip is a small movement of soil and rocks down a slope. A landslide is a large amount of earth and rocks falling down a cliff or the side of a mountain - according to Collins Dictionary.

  9. Police searching for man gone missing while walking dog find bodypublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    A body has been located in the area of Gower Road, Trefriw during the multi-agency search for 75-year-old Brian Perry who went missing yesterday.

    At this stage there has been no formal identification but his family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

    Chief Inspector Simon Kneale of North Wales Police said: "I would like to thank the efforts of all agencies involved in the searches in very difficult conditions and for the local community who supported the teams in the area.

    "Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time and they have asked that their privacy is respected.”

    National Highways says the following services have been affected:

    • A66 between North Yorkshire (A1M) and Cumbria (M6)
    • The A30 in Devon/Cornwall
    • The A46 in Nottinghamshire
    • The A49 in Shropshire/Herefordshire
    • The M56 in Greater Manchester

    Over on the Dartford Crossing, the Dartford east tunnel is closed from 10:00 to 05:00 due to maintenance works.

    The M48 Severn Bridge is currently open , externalin both directions, after it was shut down yesterday due to strong winds.

  12. Transport disruption expected as Storm Bert brings more strong winds to UKpublished at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    The Met Office has warned very strong winds today are likely to bring further disruption to transport services.

    Here's a look at some of the affected services across the country:

    National Rail has reported disruption to some services on parts of its Wales network. It says the following services will not be running due to the impact of the storm:

    • Between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog
    • Between Shrewsbury and Swansea via the Heart of Wales services

    Great Western Railway is also experiencing some disruption, external. The following services have been affected by weather-related disturances:

  13. Fears missing dog walker has been swept awaypublished at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    A major search is under way for a man in his 70s who went missing in the River Conwy near Trefriw, Conwy county, yesterday afternoon, North Wales Police says.

    He has short white hair, is 6ft tall, and is wearing a black and red bobble hat, dark waterproof trousers and brown walking boots. He is also wearing a red Berghaus waterproof jacket and was accompanied by his dog, a black and white collie, with a black lead and a black regatta coat.

    He had been walking with his wife near Gower Road, an area affected by significant floodwater.

    "Floodwater poses significant risks, often hiding dangers and being deeper than it appears. I would urge members of the public to always avoid walking or driving through floodwater—it’s never worth the risk," says Ch Insp Simon Kneale.

  14. Business owners 'hoping for the best'published at 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    In Wales, Steve Western tells the BBC he has shut his office on Mill Street in Pontypridd and he’s just “hoping for the best”.

    “We've cleared the office, turned the electrics off... The shops behind me, they've been affected worse because they're at a dip.

    “We're just waiting for the water to recede now really and we'll go and help clear out the other shops.”

    The community of Pontypridd - which has been hit by major flooding in recent years - has been rallying together to help keep the water from doing further damage.

    South Wales has definitely seen some of the worst of the wet weather.

    Well over 100mm has fallen in some places, which is broadly in line with forecasts that some places could see a whole month’s rain during this weekend.

    The rain will slowly ease in south Wales, with the worst of it now moving slowly eastwards across south-west England and the south Midlands which are also seeing some flooding impacts - and are covered by a Met Office yellow warning for rain.

    Numerous flood warnings are in force and those numbers are changing all the time.

    Strong winds will also have an impact this afternoon. Yellow warnings for wind cover large parts of southern and eastern England, Northern Ireland and western Scotland with gales bringing the risk of further disruption.

    The inclement weather has also shut down the annual Winter Wonderland fair in Hyde Park.

    The event organisers confirm the fair won't be opening to the public today "in like with the Royal Parks's" decision to close Hyde Park due to the strong winds Storm Bert is bringing to the capital.

    "The safety of our visitors and staff are our top priority and we are sorry for any disappointment caused," they say. "All affected ticket holders have been contacted directly and will have the opportunity to reschedule or refund their tickets."

  17. Storm Bert forces London's Royal Parks to shutpublished at 12:27 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    We're now hearing all Royal Parks will be closed today because of the "severe wind gusts" Storm Bert has been causing.

    The parks include popular London tourist hotspots such as Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, St James's Park and Green Park.

    "Due to severe wind gusts caused by Storm Bert, all of the Royal Parks will be closed on Sunday 24 November. This closure includes all cafes, kiosks, park roads and cycleways," the charity confirms on its website.

  18. Almost 400 flood warnings and alerts in place across UKpublished at 12:16 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    Nearly 400 flood alerts and warnings have been issued across the UK as the country continues to grapple with bad weather.

    There are a total of 280 warnings and alerts in England, affecting areas such as the Landford to Wade Bridge on the River Blackwater and the River Yarty from Yarcombe to Axminster.

    In Scotland there are 13, while 106 have been issued in Wales, more than double the amount we reported earlier.

  20. Fresh weather warning issued for Northern Irelandpublished at 11:52 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November

    A yellow warning for high winds from Storm Bert has come into effect across Northern Ireland.

    On Saturday, a number of homes in counties Down and Tyrone were flooded after heavy rain and wind caused by the storm.

    The wind warning will last until 18:00 GMT and has the potential to cause travel disruption and power cuts.

    On Saturday, 6,500 homes and businesses across Northern Ireland were left without power at the peak of Storm Bert, Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) said.

    There were also delays to rail services, with flooding causing some services between Belfast and Dublin to be cancelled.
