Here on Barrack Road, crowds are building, the noise is rising and the anticipation is growing.

Fans I spoke to said they still can’t quite believe their team has won a trophy and they simply had to be here today.

After a 70-year wait for domestic trophy success, it’s no surprise they want to celebrate hard today

  17. What's it like at the Town Moor?published at 15:46 Greenwich Mean Time 29 March

    Adam Samuel
    BBC Look North sports reporter

Down here at the Town Moor there are already thousands of fans gathered to rewatch the cup final on a big screen.

When I asked why they chose to be here rather than at the parade, more than one called the opportunity to be here "once in a lifetime".

It might be breezy with rain soon forecast, but nothing is going to dampen spirits.

It's a free, but ticketed event.

Special guests on the stage include Ant and Dec, Alan Shearer and a Q&A with Eddie Howe and the players.

    The pubs are booming.

Thousands of people are making their way up through Newcastle to the Town Moor.

It’s a sea of calm at the moment but they’ll all be eagerly waiting to catch a glimpse of the cup and team bus.

Fan Bob Harland (below) says he didn’t expect to see the result before he died. His partner Ellen jokes while feeling his face "he’s still alive, and he’s here".

  19. 'You can't say they didn't earn it'published at 15:28 Greenwich Mean Time 29 March

    Matthew Raisbeck
    BBC Newcastle Sport

It's two weeks since they ended the decades-long wait for a trophy by winning at Wembley.

And this afternoon, the club, its supporters, and the city will celebrate one of the greatest days in Newcastle United's history.

The special Magpies teams of the Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson eras came close but it's Eddie Howe and his players who have finally delivered silverware.

They will forever be heroes on Tyneside for what they have done.

Their run to the final was exciting, but far from straightforward with Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Arsenal among the teams they defeated before facing Liverpool at Wembley. That's the top four in the Premier League.

You can't say they didn't earn it.

Roared on by 32,000 supporters, their performance in the final was outstanding.

A first-half header from Geordie defender Dan Burn was the club's first Wembley goal in 25 years.

And when star striker Alexander Isak scored early in the second half, the black and white section of Wembley could really start to dream.

Despite a late Liverpool goal, and 12 minutes of added-on time, it was Newcastle's day.

Seventy years since their last domestic trophy - and two years on from a crushing cup final defeat by Manchester United - Newcastle were Wembley winners.
