    Staffordshire's gritters have been out for the first time this winter.

    The county council sent out 38 of its lorries on Monday afternoon to grit more than 1,600 miles of roads.

    They were out again at 03:30 GMT on Tuesday morning and Mark Deaville, the councillor responsible for highways, said the weather forecast was "spot on".

    While the snow has made driving conditions more difficult and forced some schools to close, people have also had enough of the white stuff to have some fun too.

    Here are a selection of snowmen photos we have received so far:

  3. More freezing temperatures throughout the weekpublished at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    We're in for some cold weather throughout this week.

    The forecast for most of the region is for temperatures to rise slightly about freezing during the day and then to drop below freezing overnight.

    The coldest night is likely to be tonight going into Wednesday, with temperatures likely to drop to -3C (27F) in most places.

  4. Shropshire announces school closurespublished at 08:29 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    In the last few minutes, Shropshire Council, external has updated its website to show 14 primary school closures and seven secondary school closures, with another partially closed.

    Telford and Wrekin Council , externalis still reporting just two school closures.

    Here are how some of the key routes in the West Midlands were looking just after 08:10 GMT on Tuesday.

    National Highways has not reported any serious incidents due to the weather in the area but has warned drivers to leave extra time for their journeys after the overnight snow:

  7. Rising number of school closurespublished at 08:00 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    We've now got a dozen school closures in Worcestershire, external, six in Staffordshire, external, three in Herefordshire, external and a couple in Telford, external.

    In a lot of cases it is the freezing conditions around the schools which are being blamed because they are making travel difficult for families and staff.

    If you are unsure what your school is doing this morning, your local authority should have a list on its website.

    We're not getting notice of any major road closures so far and councils have been reporting their gritters were out on the main roads overnight.

    But it looks like the bowls might be off in Leamington Spa this morning:

    We're starting to get a few more school closures now, in Staffordshire, external and Herefordshire, external.

    On the list now we have:

    • Loxley Hall School in Staffordshire

    We've had our first snowman photo of the morning!

  12. Disruption to rail travel in the north of Englandpublished at 07:06 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    So far there are no snow-related problems on the railways here in the West Midlands.

    But if you were planning on travelling further north, you might want to check your train, external is still running because there have been cancellations across the North East and North West.

  13. Driving warning after overnight snowpublished at 07:02 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    Drivers are being warned to take care on roads, external in the West Midlands this morning as rush hour is underway after the overnight snow.

    Darren Clark, National Highways' severe weather resilience manager, advised drivers: “Keep your distance and reduce your speed, because even in conditions that seem normal, and where the snow is not settling, it can be slippery if ice patches have formed, or where fresh grit has not been worked into the carriageway."

    “Drivers should plan their journeys, monitor weather reports and pack a snow kit of blankets, food, water and a shovel.”

  14. A cold week with a chance of more snow to comepublished at 06:49 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    We're forecast a cold week and that means there could be more snow tomorrow.

    Met Office spokesperson Nicola Maxey added. "A few degrees below average both day and night for most of the country."

    Temperatures in the coming days will be much lower than the mid-November average by day - and are expected to reach below freezing by night.

    They are predicted to drop to -2C in London on Friday, -4C in Birmingham and -7C further north.

    But as things stand, there is no yellow warning for the West Midlands tomorrow.

  15. Only one school closure so farpublished at 06:42 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    It's still early, but at this stage there is only one reported school closure as a result of the snow.

    That's Wigmore Primary School Primary in Herefordshire.

    Herefordshire Council reports: "With snow settling and set to continue all morning, Wigmore Primary School will be closed today."

    Instead, it said work would be set for the children online.

  17. 'First taste of winter'published at 06:26 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    The Met Office is describing the overnight snow as the country’s “first taste of winter”.

    We're seeing much heavier snowfalls in the north east and north west of the country but Staffordshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and parts of Birmingham and the Black Country have seen some this morning.

  18. Yellow weather warning from Met Officepublished at 06:17 Greenwich Mean Time 19 November

    The Met Office has issued a couple of weather warnings because of the snow and as you can see, one of them is covering the northern half of the West Midlands.

    The yellow warning advises there is a small chance of travel delays and power cuts and warns you to be careful on untreated pavements and cycle paths.
