  5. Changed loyalties proved key in catching Morganpublished at 10:22 British Summer Time 29 July

Detectives initially believed Carol had been the victim of a burglary gone wrong, but the 2018 investigation uncovered a new witness who proved crucial in catching Morgan.

Jane Bunting, 60, told the jury she met Morgan in the Dolphin pub in Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, a few months before the murder.

Ms Bunting, who was 17 at the time, said she was "appalled" and "horrified" when Morgan asked if her ex-boyfriend knew anyone who could kill.

She said: “He'd say, 'I hate Carol', 'I don't want to be married to her', 'I wish she'd die', 'Wouldn't an accident be nice?'."

Det Supt Carl Foster previously said Ms Bunting told officers she had “been waiting for you to come see me for 40 years” when they knocked on her door.

  6. Sentencing is delayed by half an hourpublished at 10:18 British Summer Time 29 July

We've just heard that the proceedings have been delayed until 10:30 BST.

We'll bring you rolling updates from that moment, but you can watch some of our previous coverage live at the top of this page. Stick with us.

  7. Watch live: Coverage now being streamedpublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 29 July

You can now watch our coverage via a streaming link at the top of this page. A little later, the judge's sentencing remarks will be broadcasted.

It's still a relatively new thing in England and Wales for these remarks to be televised in some criminal cases - and they only cover the sentencing process, rather than the whole court case.

The idea is to shine a light on the criminal justice system, to show how it works and how judges make their decisions.

There will be a slight delay of about 10 seconds on the video feed we’re streaming so we can monitor the content, and we may mute some sections of the audio if it contains detail which is too distressing.

If you’re not familiar with the court system, here’s what’s likely to happen today.

The BBC is in court along with other journalists, all ready to listen to the prosecution outline the facts of the case.

The prosecutor is Pavlos Panayi KC (P) and we can expect him to set out aggravating factors as to why Allen Morgan should get a tougher sentence.

In this part of the hearing, we might hear an impact statement read on behalf of Carol Morgan’s family.

Then Morgan’s defence barrister, Colin Aylott KC, will provide mitigation on behalf of his client, setting out reasons as to why Morgan should get a lower sentence.

Once that is all dealt with, the judge – Mr Justice Martin Spencer – will weigh both arguments up before deciding what sentence he will pass.

  9. Margaret Morgan arrives for her husband’s sentencingpublished at 09:52 British Summer Time 29 July

The prosecution stated that one of the reasons Allen Morgan hired a hitman to kill his wife was because he was having a passionate affair with another woman.

That woman was Margaret Spooner – a woman who became his wife a year after Carol was killed.

    They’ve been together ever since.

Margaret Morgan had also been charged with conspiracy to murder, but the jury found her not guilty after the two month trial.

Today, she is here with another person for her husband’s sentencing.

  10. Who is Margaret Morgan?published at 09:51 British Summer Time 29 July

During the original investigation, police officers became quickly aware that Allen Morgan was suspected of having an affair.

“It would be fair to say that the original investigation team had their concerns and suspicions about Allen and Margaret,” Det Supt Carl Foster previously told the BBC.

“But, of course, Allen Morgan had a concrete alibi.”

Margaret Spooner, who married Allen Morgan and is now Margaret Morgan, also stood trial accused of conspiring to murder Carol.

However, the jury found her not guilty of the charge.

    Laura Foster
    Reporting from Luton Crown Court

The trial of Allen Morgan was heard in courtroom two at Luton Crown Court.

But such is the interest in this case, the sentencing has been moved to courtroom five – the biggest one here.

A number of people who knew Carol Morgan – including her first husband – are sat in the waiting room hoping to get a space in the public gallery.

With them are a host of reporters, as well as police officers who worked on the case back in the 80s, as well as those who have been involved in the more recent investigative work.

  12. Allen Morgan’s ‘cast-iron’ alibipublished at 09:43 British Summer Time 29 July

Allen Morgan had taken Carol’s two children, then aged 14 and 12, to a cinema in Luton on the night she was murdered.

They saw two films before Morgan returned to the shop and found his wife’s body in the storeroom of the shop they ran together.

Prosecutors told the trial how the cinema trip gave Morgan a “cast-iron” alibi while a hitman murdered Carol and robbed the shop.

On 13 August 1981, Morgan rang the police himself – appearing to be confused and jumbled - to report his wife’s death.

  13. What are the offences Morgan is being sentenced for?published at 09:32 British Summer Time 29 July

We’re soon going to be bringing you updates from Luton Crown Court, the same building where Allen Morgan was found guilty in July.

Jurors at this court convicted Morgan of conspiring to murder Carol, his then-wife.

Allen Morgan, 73, who was found guilty of conspiring to murder his wife, Carol, is to be sentenced today.

Carol, 36, was killed in a “frenzied attack” inside the shop she ran with her husband in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.

After police started a cold case investigation in 2018, a key new witness proved crucial to officers uncovering Morgan’s role in his wife’s murder in August 1981.
