    Mangione was reportedly found with an ID that had his name on it, along with a fake ID. He was detained at a McDonald's on Monday morning in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

    He has not been charged in connection with the shooting.

    The person of interest being questioned in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was found with writings that appeared to be critical of the health insurance industry, the Associated Press (AP) news agency is reporting, citing a law enforcement source.

    We've reported earlier that the man also had a gun that was thought to be similar to the one used in the killing, as well as a silencer and several fake IDs.

    The law enforcement source told AP that police found the man after receiving a tip that he had been spotted at a McDonald's near Altoona, Pennsylvania.

    Altoona is about 233 miles (375 kilometres) west of New York City, where the killing of Thompson took place.

    The man being questioned by police as a person of interest in Brian Thompson's murder was reportedly picked up in a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania, according to reports by CNN and the New York Times.

    A staffer at the fast-food chain reportedly thought the man looked similar to the NYPD's photos and called police.

    Police in Atloona then responded to the call and detained the man.

  10. How far is the person of interest from the crime scene?published at 17:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December

    The person of interest stopped by police on Monday was found in Altoona, Pennsylvania. That's roughly 280 miles (450km) from the scene of the crime in New York City.

    It has not been confirmed if the man being questioned today is the shooting suspect.

    What we do know is the shooting suspect was last seen on Wednesday, taking a cab in Manhattan's Upper West Side towards the George Washington Bridge Bus Station near 178th Street and Broadway, according to Fox News.

    Prior to the shooting, police believe the suspect arrived at New York City’s Port Authority bus terminal on a Greyhound bus that came from Atlanta, according to CNN.

    Authorities are, however, unsure of when or where the suspect boarded the bus.

    While reports are emerging of a person of interest being questioned over the killing of Brian Thompson on Wednesday, police in New York have been searching for the gun used in the shooting.

    The manhunt in Thompson's murder has been ongoing since 4 December and the NYPD have been searching Central Park for any clues.

    A team of divers were seen near the New York park's iconic Bethesda Fountain all weekend during their search for the weapon.

    As reported by the BBC's US partner, CBS News, scuba teams have been searching the bottom of the lake in a grid-like pattern, while units with dogs comb the park's wooded areas

    Police have said finding the weapon is critical because it can assist detectives in finding out where it was purchased - and who owned it.

    A short while after the shooting, the suspect is seen riding an e-bike in Central Park.

    On Friday, police discovered a backpack in the park which they believe was used by the suspect.

    The person being questioned in Pennsylvania had a fake New Jersey driving licence, a source told CBS.

    Two sources familiar with the investigation also said the person was carrying multiple other fake IDs.

    We already heard the person of interest was carrying a gun similar to the one used in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

    A reminder that the person being questioned has not been confirmed as the suspect in the shooting.

    Police believe they have found the grey backpack the suspect was carrying at the time of the attack on Wednesday, CBS News reports, citing an NYPD official.

    The bag, found in Central Park on Saturday, has been sent for forensic testing and its content remains unknown, CBS, the BBC's US news partner, says.

    Police had deployed drones to Central Park to search for the backpack earlier today.

    An image released by police after the shooting showed the suspect wearing a grey backpack at the time of the attack. It is thought the suspect later discarded the backpack in the park.

    They have spoken to a source close to the investigation that said a person was taken into custody on an unrelated matter, but is now being questioned about the death of Thompson.

    It is not confirmed if the person is the suspect.

    The source said the person was carrying a firearm similar to the one used in the shooting of the UnitedHealthCare CEO.

    The source also said the physical description matched that of the person of interest being sought by the NYPD.

    Brian Thompson was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the largest private insurer in the US. He was gunned down in Manhattan last Wednesday morning.

    Thompson first joined the company in 2004 as director of corporate development and rose through the ranks to become the head of the company in April 2021.

    He earned $10.2m (£8m) working for the company last year, up from $9.8m in 2022 and $9.6m in 2021.

    Thompson graduated from the University of Iowa in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and accounting.

    Before joining UnitedHealthcare, Thompson worked at PwC.

    The 50-year-old was married to Paulette Thompson, had two sons and lived in Maple Grove, a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
