  1. We are dumping ground for the world - Trumppublished at 04:39 British Summer Time 19 July

The Republican nominee is now speaking about illegal immigration, which he describes once again as an “invasion” at the southern border with Mexico.

It's a term he often uses when discussing the subject, and he's used it multiple times tonight.

“We have become a dumping ground for the world, which is laughing at us,” Trump says of those arriving in the US illegally.

He then says, if he returns to the White House, his administration will “launch the largest deportation operation in the history of our country”.

We've just seen Melania Trump leave the VIP box. And not long after, the rest of Trump's family and friends walk out too.

They have walked down the nearby tunnel where they entered earlier.

They will likely appear on stage with Trump later in his speech.

If you are a restaurant worker, bartender, hospitality worker, caddy, barber, driver, or anyone else who relies on tip income, your tips will be 100% yours, Trump says.

This is a fairly recent talking point for his campaign, and it gets a loud cheer as he brings it up.

Income from tips is currently subject to federal income tax, but Trump has said he wants to make it exempt.

He says the idea came to him while he was chatting to a waitress at one of his hotels in Las Vegas, and it has since been adopted as an official Republican policy.

The pledge is a likely effort to appeal to working-class voters with jobs in the service industry, many of whom come from minority backgrounds.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics, for example, estimates there are more than two million waiters and waitresses across the country, with tips making up a large chunk of their income.

Fact check: Trump on inflation under Bidenpublished at 04:23 British Summer Time 19 July

A graphic shows consumer price index from 2018 to 2024Image source, BBC News

Let’s take a look at a claim Trump just made about inflation rates under the Biden administration.

“Under this administration, groceries are up 50%, gasoline is up 60 to 70%, mortgage rates have quadrupled, and the fact is it doesn't matter what they are because you can’t get the money anyway,” the former president said.

On the day President Biden came to office in January 2021 inflation stood at 1.4%, using the most widely used measure, the Consumer Price Index, external (CPI), which is based on a typical basket of household goods.

It rose significantly during the first two years of his administration, hitting a peak of 9.1% in the year to June 2022.

This was comparable with many other Western countries, which experienced high inflation rates in 2021-22 as a result of global supply chain issues as a consequence of the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine.

But Biden's spending programmes made US inflation worse, according to many economists.

Since then, US inflation has steadily fallen, with the latest monthly figure 3.3% in May, external.

Since Biden took office in January 2021, prices have risen by a total of about 20%, external.

Donald Trump started his speech on a sombre note, recounting the attempt on his life in Pennsylvania on Saturday. He spoke in hushed tones, as the crowd listened with rapt attention.

Trump has now moved on to a more boilerplate political speech, complete with some of his trademark ad libs, but his delivery is still relatively muted – and the crowd, while occasionally laughing or cheering, seems unable to feed off his energy.

Trump campaign speeches are usually raucous affairs – a give-and-take between the former president and his audience. Tonight, that dynamic has been disrupted.

  6. A first mention of Bidenpublished at 04:14 British Summer Time 19 July

"I won't mention his name again," Trump says, after a short ad lib about President Biden.

Right on cue, there's the first - and perhaps only - mention of his Democratic opponent in this speech.

  7. Trump injects personal asides to carefully worded scriptpublished at 04:09 British Summer Time 19 July

    Kayla Epstein
    Reporting from the arena floor

Trump is again on one of his unplanned tangents.

It’s a stream of consciousness on Covid, new advanced drugs, and Space Force.

He talks rapidly and almost appears not to pause for breath.

Trump then goes back to his script, but he seems more enthusiastic when he’s riffing on subjects that cross his mind than following the teleprompter and the carefully vetted speech crawling down its screen.

  8. Trump yet to mention Biden's namepublished at 04:06 British Summer Time 19 July

The former president is now listing the areas where he is targeting his Democratic opponents.

Inflation, illegal immigration, and foreign conflicts.

These have been constant themes throughout the Trump election campaign so far, and he is emphasising them repeatedly here tonight.

But there is one notable absence when compared to his usual rally speeches.

We're 30 minutes in, and he still hasn’t said Joe Biden’s name.

From my perch on stage left, I can see Trump’s teleprompter across the room.

He riffs off-script as he talks about Kid Rock, who "makes so much money he doesn’t know what to do".

While Trump ad libs, the teleprompter is frozen, waiting for him to resume.

He thanks Dana White and shouts out to Hulk Hogan, who stands in the Trump family box.

He goes down the row to praise his son, Eric Trump.

The crowd is on its feet as Trump shouts out to his wife, Melania.

He also thanks their son, Barron Trump, who is mostly kept out of the political spotlight.

  11. Trump cites his legal victory in Floridapublished at 03:58 British Summer Time 19 July

Trump brings up the dismissal of his classified documents case by a Florida court.

He says a "highly respected federal judge" made the decision.

The justice department special counsel has appealed against Judge Eileen Cannon’s ruling to toss out the case.

"If Democrats want to unify our country, they should drop these partisan witch hunts without delay," Trump says.

The convention has been a family affair for the Trumps, with a broad mix of relatives either speaking or appearing in the arena's VIP box.

The messaging has been consistent, with an apparent campaign effort to present a softer Trump with repeated anecdotes presenting him as a family man.

He now turns to his wife, Melania, and his family, who he thanks.

All his children have been seen here over the past four days, except for his youngest son Barron, who he also names and thanks.

"We all love Barron," he says, getting chuckles from the crowd.

As Trump walked over to find Corey Comperatore’s firefighting uniform at the side of the stage, a few delegates near me looked emotional.

Trump just held a moment of silence for Comperatore.

Standing just off the stage on the left, I saw him lean in towards the podium and look out across the crowd as they went silent for several moments.

There was just a moment of silence in the arena for Corey Comperatore, who was killed in the Pennsylvania shooting at Trump's rally.

The 50-year-old volunteer fire chief was shot as he dived onto family members to protect them.

“He lost his life selflessly acting as a human shield to protect them from flying bullets,” Trump said.

On stage this evening are Comperatore's firefighting helmet and jacket, and Trump points them out and stands by them.

Trump tells the crowd a doctor told him ears bleed more than other body parts.

“So we learned something,” he riffs, as the crowd chuckles in response.

Trump tells the crowd he wasn’t “supposed to be here tonight".

“You are!” a Nebraska delegate shouts. The arena quickly picks it up and chants: “Yes you are!”

He says he is with them "only by the grace of almighty God".

The crowd is hushed as Trump tells the story of being shot at his rally on Saturday.

The silence is only broken when Trump says, “I had God on my side.” The crowd applauds.

“There was blood pouring everywhere, and yet, in a certain way I felt very safe, because I had God on my side,” Trump says, as he continues to describe his experience of the attack.

“If I had not moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be with you tonight.”

“I am not supposed to be here tonight,” he says. “I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of almighty God. Many people say it was a providential moment.”

We’ve heard some references to divine intervention at this week’s convention when speakers have been discussing the shooting, and Trump is touching on a similar theme here.

  20. Trump speaks slowly and quietlypublished at 03:39 British Summer Time 19 July

    Gareth Evans
    Reporting from inside the arena

The former president is speaking slowly and quietly, at times in almost hushed tones.

He's talking about the assassination attempt, which he just said was painful to discuss, so perhaps there will be a shift in tone later when the subject changes.
