At 03:00 GMT, Copacabana beach in Rio, Brazil, will be packed with revellers ringing in the new year. And this aerial view of the famous beach shows plenty of people are there already.

The famed celebrations, locally called the Réveillon party, is one of the largest in the world.

But before the organised chaos, there's a lot to prepare, including loading barges with enough fireworks to mark the occasion in spectacular fashion.

Attendees can expect several boats laden with fireworks, so they all get a good view, as well as performances from big name stars like Brazilian singer Anitta.

A beach vendor told Reuters news agency that sales are already "very good".

He says "it's still early but 2 million people are expected today. We are together! Happy new year for all."

And the Copacabana Palace hotel is expecting to open more than 1,000 bottles of champagne to bring in 2025. Sounds like a headache for plenty tomorrow!

Bangladesh has welcomed 2025 after a year of significant upheaval.

In August, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned after weeks of deadly anti-government protests, putting an end to her more than two decades dominating the country's politics.

Jubilant crowds took to the streets to celebrate the news, while the PM fled the country.

An interim government was formed in the aftermath and the administration later confirmed elections could be held by the end of 2025.

Before Bangladesh ushered in the new year, thousands of Bangladeshis attended a "March for Unity" in Dhaka, the country's capital, to mark the student-led uprising and pay tribute to those killed in the violence.

It's 25 years since London's first New Year's Eve fireworks, a celebration that has become such a staple it's now shown around the world.

The New Year's Eve event in 1999 marked the start of the UK's millennium celebrations along with the opening of the Millennium Dome exhibition (the building is now known as the O2) and the Millennium Wheel. The latter was supposed to be a temporary attraction, but as we'll see at midnight tonight, is still very much a part of London's big New Year's Eve show.

The fireworks were cancelled completely in 2000 because of safety fears, and London wouldn't see another New Year's Eve display until revellers rang in 2004.

  11. London's firework show is going ahead - despite the weatherpublished at 17:27 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

    Tony Grew
    reporting from London

Several high-profile New Year's Eve events in the UK - including the world famous Hogmanay street party and fireworks in Edinburgh - have been cancelled as parts of the country are under weather warnings for wind, snow and heavy rain.

One of the biggest celebrations - London's fireworks on the River Thames - is going ahead. The Mayor of London's office has confirmed the display will take place despite concerns about high winds and bad weather.

The mayor's spokesperson says ticketholders for the event “and the many millions watching around the world are set for a spectacular night of fireworks from the banks of the Thames to welcome in the new year".

But those who do not have a ticket for the riverside viewing areas are being urged to “watch the show on TV or welcome in 2025 in the capital’s fantastic range of hospitality venues”.

Midnight has struck in several countries in Asia with firework displays taking place in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines as millions gathered from Beijing to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate the end of 2024 and the start of 2025.

Ahead of the new year in China, President Xi Jinping told the nation the economy is on an "upward trajectory" and issued a warning to, what Beijing views as, pro-democracy forces in self-governed Taiwan after years of growing tensions.

  19. China's Xi raises Taiwan 'reunification' in new year addresspublished at 15:48 Greenwich Mean Time 31 December 2024

As China prepares to see in 2025 at 16:00 GMT, the country’s president has been addressing the nation.

Xi Jinping said no-one can stop China’s “reunification” with self-governed Taiwan - issuing a warning to what Beijing regards as pro-independence forces on the island.

Xi's comments come after increasing pressure on the island in recent years, with China sending warships and fighter planes into Taiwanese waters and airspace.

Xi also addressed China’s economy claiming it has “rebounded and is on an upward trajectory”, despite facing significant economic challenges.

There have been growing concerns in China about the impact of an incoming Trump presidency and the threat of tariffs on the goods it exports to the US.

For the first time in more than half a century, Syrians will enter the new year no longer under Assad-family rule.

Syria is home to many ethnic and religious groups, including Kurds, Armenians, Assyrians, Christians, Druze, Alawite Shia and Arab Sunnis, the last of whom make up a majority of the Muslim population.

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) - who led the offensive to topple the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad - has promised to protect the rights and freedoms of minorities in the country.
