    Here's a round-up of what has happened so far:

    • The amber warning for snow from the Met Office came into force at 21:00 last night and remains in place for the rest of the day
    • There has been some disruption to flights at Newcastle Airport
    • On the roads, the A66 between Cumbria and County Durham has been closed and there has been some disruption on the A1 in County Durham, along with other roads
    • The snow is also having an impact on rail travel rail travel with Northern advising people not to travel and LNER saying services are being affected

  2. Train passengers urged not to travelpublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Rail firm Northern is advising all passengers not to travel today.

    A spokesman said: "Due to significant snowfall causing problems on the rail network we advise all passengers not to travel.

    "This position will be reviewed throughout the day."

    Updates will be posted to the firm's X page and website, which passengers are urged to check regularly, external.

  4. Trains cancelled on Bishop Auckland linepublished at 10:23 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Trains between Bishop Auckland and Darlington have been cancelled because of the snow, Northern has warned.

    The rail firm said disruption was expected to last until the end of Sunday.

    Anyone wanting to travel on trains in the region is being urged to check the status of their journey online, external.

    TransPennine Express is also asking passengers to check online, external.

  5. Carlisle turns white as snow arrivespublished at 10:14 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    People in Carlisle woke up to a covering of the white stuff this morning. Here are a couple of photos from around the city centre.

  6. Few reports of power cuts so farpublished at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    So far there does not seem to be a major problem with power cuts, with only a few reported across the region.

    Northern Powergrid said its teams are on storm response alert, ready to support customers if they are impacted by the heavy snow.  

    Its Power Cuts Map, external shows estimated times for when it expect to get the power back on.

    However, it warns that the heavy snow can make access and working conditions challenging.

  8. Better news for Metro userspublished at 09:57 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    The Tyne and Wear Metro was experiencing weather-related problems earlier this morning due to a signalling issue which stopped trains departing from the depot.

    In its latest update, Nexus says it is now running a service with gaps of more than 30 minutes systemwide.

    It is working to return to get trains back to timetable as quickly as possible.

  9. Traffic stopped on A1(M) near Durhampublished at 09:51 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Heavy snowfall is affecting travel on the A1(M) near Durham, National Highways has said.

    Traffic is stopped southbound between J61 at Bowburn and J60 for Bishop Auckland due to stranded vehicles on the carriageway.

    Recovery is under way but all drivers are being urged to check the conditions before heading out, external.

    Sunderland saw its fair share of snow overnight...but it's mostly turning to slush now as the rain takes hold.

  11. Beamish shut for the daypublished at 09:37 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Anyone hoping to head to Beamish for a wintry day out today will be disappointed.

    The museum said on its website it was with a "heavy heart" it had to shut for the day due to snow.

    "We’re saddened to have to make this decision but the safety of our visitors, staff and volunteers must always come first, and due to the weather conditions it just wouldn’t be possible to open.

    "For anyone with a booking for our pantomime performances today, we’ll be sending you an email with further information.

    "Thank you everyone for your understanding."

  12. Disruption across rail networkspublished at 09:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    London North Eastern Railway says the heavy snow means train services running across the whole network may be cancelled or delayed.

    Meanwhile, the line between Darlington and Bishop Auckland is blocked, according to Northern.

    It says services running to and from these stations will be cancelled and disruption is expected until the end of the day.

  13. Mixed picture for snow across the patchpublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Most of the region is waking up to snowy weather, however it is rain which is winning out along the east coast, with not a snowflake in sight.

    Elsewhere services are beginning to swing into action minimise disruption.

    Snow ploughs are out and about clearing the A69 in Throckley, near Newcastle.

    There is a covering of about four or five centimetres of snow here in Stanley.

    While it might have that winter wonderland feeling, it is less good news for drivers.

    Already there are reports of slow traffic on the A1, and an overturned lorry causing problems on the A19 near the Holystone Roundabout.

  16. A66 closedpublished at 08:41 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    National Highways has confirmed the A66 in County Durham and Cumrbia is closed due to snow.

    The road is closed in both directions between the A1M (J53) and the M6 (J40).

    It said its highways teams had also closed the B6276 between Brough and Middleton-in-Teesdale at 22:30 on Saturday until further notice, to stop drivers seeking alternative routes during the A66 closure.

    The snow has meant some disruption to flights this morning at Newcastle Airport.

    In a social media post it said: "The Airport continues to experience heavy and continuous snowfall and teams are working across the site to keep passengers and colleagues safe.

    "We continue to see some disruption to the flight schedule and recommend passengers visit our website or app for the latest flight information, or contact their airline."

  18. Motorists stranded on Lake District passpublished at 08:25 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Disruption started on Saturday in the Lake District with some of the high passes closed due to ice.

    In the afternoon, emergency services had to rescue six vehicles after they became stranded in icy conditions on Wrynose Pass - one of the most challenging roads in the Lake District.

  19. Amber warning in place throughout Sundaypublished at 08:17 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    The amber warning for snow from the Met Office for the North East and Cumbria started at 21:00 last night and remains in place throughout Sunday.

    An amber warning means travel will be disrupted, there may be issues with power cuts and other services such as mobile phone coverage and some rural communities could be cut off.

    Here is a quick overview of some of the issues

    Cumbria Police has already said it is dealing with a lot of snow-related incidents.

    There are major problems on the Tyne and Wear Metro due to a signalling fault at the depot caused by adverse weather conditions.

    Some flights out of Newcastle Airport have been cancelled and passengers are being advised to check before they travel.
