  • Liberal Democrats take control of Shropshire Council

    The Lib Dems have won in the Ruyton and Baschurch division.

    Robert Jones is councillor.

    Shifnal North has gone light blue.

    Its new councillor is Thomas Clayton for Reform UK.

    Rosemary Dartnall is safely returned in the new Column and Sutton division.

    The leader of the Labour group said it had been a difficult day for the party all round.

    "It changes the landscape of the Labour group but, yeah, the landscape of the council sounds like it's going to be incredibly different and we have lost a number of good councillors," she said.

    "The Liberal Democrats could be the largest party, very likely to be the largest party, but, whether they technically have a majority is yet to be confirmed."

    We've had a break in the Lib Dem wins in the latest set of declarations at Shrewsbury Sports Village.

    Amanda Duncan for Reform UK is new councillor for Sundorne and Old Heath, while Susan Coleman has won Seven Valley for the Conservatives.

    Jeremy Blandford of the Lib Dems is the councillor for Market Drayton North, while Julian Dean of the Green party is councillor for Porthill.

    Here's the situation with about 40 per cent of the seats counted.

    You can see the Liberal Democrats have romped home in a majority of those declared so far.

    Although Reform UK haven't had the huge breakthroughs they have seen elsewhere, they are in an, albeit distant, second place at the moment.

    More wins for the Lib Dems are flowing in.

    They've won in the Underdale and Shawbury divisions.

    Their councillors are David Vasmer and Alison Williams respectively.

    Reform have been their closest contenders in both divisions.

    Jon Tandy won the new Bicton Heath seat in Shrewsbury for the Liberal Democrats, but he's not new to Shropshire Council.

    For 14 years he was a Labour councillor and town mayor for 2013/14.

    He fell out of the party because it "wasn't doing enough" on Shropshire Council.

    Tandy quit politics in 2017, but says he’s happy to be back and ready “for the hard work”.

  9. Massive win for Lib Dems in Bishop's Castlepublished at 16:06 British Summer Time 2 May

    A huge landslide of votes for the Lib Dems in the Bishop's Castle division.

    The new councillor is Ruth Houghton, who got a massive 1012 votes.

    Reform - their closest rival - had 216

  10. Reform wins in Shifnal Ruralpublished at 16:05 British Summer Time 2 May

    Reform UK have taken another win - in the Shifnal Rural division.

    The new councillor is Elizabeth Barker - she got 400 votes exactly.

  11. Two more victories for Lib Demspublished at 15:54 British Summer Time 2 May

    The Lib Dems have won in two more divisions - Bicton Heath and Copthorne.

    Their councillors are Jon Tandy and Rob Wilson respectively.

  12. Reform councillor: 'honour and pleasure'published at 15:53 British Summer Time 2 May

    Harry Hancock-Davies won Battlefield in Shrewsbury for Reform UK.

    He told BBC Radio Shropshire: "I am absolutely delighted - it's an honour and a pleasure to be elected the first Reform councillor at Shropshire Council.

    "I think people want change, and that's why they voted for me and Reform UK. People want change, they want the council to change, and they want to actually see that change in their ward as well.

    "We'll work with any party, as long as there's the interest there for the people of Shropshire, we'll work with any party."

    Gregory Ebbs of the Lib Dems has just won in the Whitchurch South division.

    He was a contestant on The Apprentice in 2023.

    Elsewhere, the Lib Dems have won in Oswestry North and Oteley and Reabrook.

    Wendy Owen is the councillor for Oswestry North, while Victoria Moore is councillor for Oteley and Reabrook.

    Reform UK has won in Brown Clee - its new councillor is George Hollyhead.

    The new Lib Dem councillor for Whitchurch North, Andy Hall said voters were "sick and tired" of "nightmare" Shropshire Council, with its "financial mismanagement".

    "They've had years and they've got rid of all their resources," he said.

    "They've made some really poor decisions and people are ready for change, they're ready for something new, and they're sick and tired of this two-party system that doesn't seem to work for everybody."

  16. Green Party takes first winpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 2 May

    The Green Party has taken its first win in the Radbook division in Shrewsbury

    Christopher Lemon is the new councillor, winning with 759 votes.

    His nearest competitor was Reform UK with 313 votes.

  17. Lib Dems sweeping up seatspublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 2 May

    Bernie Bentick is councillor for the Meole division - another large win for the Lib Dems.

    He got 814 votes, while Reform UK got 301, followed by Labour with 127. The Conservatives had 106, and the Greens came in with 65.

    Ludlow East's councillor is Beverley Waite for the Liberal Democrats, who is the current mayor of Ludlow.

    She won by more than 100 votes, with Reform the closest behind.

    The Lib Dems are responding to the wins with cheers, whooping and clapping.

    The party has also won in Bayston Hill - with a huge 920 votes.

    Teri Trickett is the councillor.

  18. First win for Conservatives and another for Lib Demspublished at 15:16 British Summer Time 2 May

    The Conservatives have had their first win of the day too.

    It's in Albrighton, and the councillor is Nigel Lumby - he was uncontested in 2021.

    Elsewhere, Andy Boddington is returned for Ludlow North. He had 699 votes, with his nearest rival - Reform - on 334.

  19. First win for Labourpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 2 May

    The Labour Party has had its first win of the afternoon - in the Castlefields and Ditherington division.

    Long-standing councillor Alan Moseley, who used to lead his party group, is safely returned.

  20. Three more Lib Dem wins - Abbey, Harlescott and Monkmoorpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 2 May

    The Liberal Democrats have won in three more divisions in Shrewsbury - Abbey, Harlescott and Monkmoor.

    The new councillors are Jamie Daniels, Rhys Gratton and Adam Fejer respectively.
